The district of Yorongos is located in the Rioja province of the San Martín region in the central north of Peru . The district was established on December 9, 1935. It has an area of 74.53 km² (according to other sources 81.8 km²). At the 2017 census, 2446 inhabitants lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 2254, in 2007 it was 3128. The district administration is located in the 860 m high town of Yorongos with 1962 inhabitants (as of 2017). Yorongos is 22 km west of the regional capital Moyobamba .
Geographical location
The Yorongos District is located in the extreme south of the Rioja Province. The district lies in a basin landscape between the Peruvian Central Cordillera in the west and the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera in the east. The Río Tonchima , a tributary of the Río Mayo , flows north along the southern and eastern district boundaries .
The district of Yorongos borders in the northwest with the district Rioja , in the northeast with the district Habana ( province Moyobamba ), in the east and south with the district Soritor (also in the province Moyobamba) and in the southwest with the district Vista Alegre ( province Rodríguez de Mendoza) ).
