Carl Gustaf Mörner , Baron since 1674 , Count von Morlanda since 1716 , ( Swedish Carl Gustaf greve Mörner af Morlanda ; * 1658 in Malmö , † October 27, 1721 in Jönköping ) was a Swedish field marshal .

Life

Origin and family

Carl was a member of the Swedish line of the originally Brandenburg noble family Mörner . His parents were the Swedish lieutenant general and governor Hans Georg Freiherr Mörner af Morlanda (1623–1685) and Beata, née Schulman († 1706).

In 1685 he married Katarina Margareta Freiin Bonde (1664–1705), a daughter of the Swedish statesman Gustaf Bonde (1620–1667). With Christina Anna Countess Bielke (1687–1742), a daughter of Field Marshal and Governor General Nils Bielke (1644–1716), he entered into a second marriage in 1705. The two marriages resulted in a total of 16 children, including:

Morlanda was raised to the Swedish count status in 1716 and introduced to the count class of the Swedish knighthood in 1719 (No. 60). The Count's line that he donated is currently in existence.

Career

Mörner began his career in 1673 as a rider in the body regiment of the widow queen on horseback. In 1674 he was a participant in the promotion to the baron class of his father.

During the Skåne War , Mörner became a cornet in 1675 and a lieutenant in 1676 . In the same year he took part in the battles at Halmstad and Lund . In 1677 he first moved to the Småland Cavalry Regiment as Rittmeister , took part in the Battle of Landskrona and returned to the Queen's regiment. In 1678 he became lieutenant captain and in 1679 commander of the body satellite.

He switched to French military service from 1691 to 1692 in order to take part in the Palatine War of Succession under the Duke of Luxembourg .

As lieutenant colonel and head of the regiment , Mörner returned to the royal Swedish body satellite in 1693. From 1694 he was colonel and commander of the Östgöta cavalry regiment. He rose in 1700 at the beginning of the Great Northern War to major general of the cavalry and, after which he was in the same year at the landing at Humlebæk , 1701 at the Battle of the Daugava , 1702 at the Wilna and Klissow and 1703 at the Siege of Thorn had participated in 1704 to lieutenant general of the cavalry. In 1711 he was promoted to general of the cavalry and was governor in Gothenburg and Bohuslän from 1712 to 1716 . In 1716 he became royal councilor and governor general of Gothenburg and Bohuslän, Närke and Värmland , Halland , Skaraborg and Älvsborgs län , which he remained until 1719. He was appointed field marshal, participated in the defense of the attack on Gothenburg in 1717 and took part in the defense of Frederikshald against the Danes as well as in the campaigns in Norway in 1716 and 1718. He ended his tour as president of the Göta hovrätt , to which he was appointed in 1719 and which he remained until his death.

Mörner had extensive estates , such as Olstorp in the parish of Askeryds, Espelunda in the parish of Ringkarleby and Ervalla with Forsnäs in the parish of Sund, and finally to Grönlund in the parish of Åsbo, all of Östergötland County . He was buried in the church at Ervalla.
