David von Krafft (* 1655 in Hamburg ; † September 20, 1724 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish painter of German descent.

Life

David Krafft was called to Sweden by court portrait painter David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl in 1675 and instructed him in the art of painting. Ehrenstrahl was not only Krafft's teacher, but also his uncle. With financial support from Queen Ulrike Eleonore the Elder , Krafft spent about ten years abroad for study purposes. The journey to Italy via Denmark and Germany lasted three years, including portraits of the Danish royal family. In Italy he traveled from Venice via Florence to Rome , where he depicted the abdicated Queen Christina in her palace. Krafft also visited Naples and Bologna before moving north again via Venice. A portrait of the imperial family was made in Vienna and at the same time he received news of the death of his Swedish patroness. That didn't stop Krafft from visiting Württemberg , Switzerland , Paris and the Netherlands . In 1696 Krafft was Ehrenstrahl's successor as court painter in Stockholm.

Through his first wife, Justine Sofie Friedenreich, he came into contact with Reichsrat Joachim von Düben the Elder (1671–1730), which improved his position at court. He later married the widow Elisabeth Speet, through whom he got into a number of legal conflicts. In addition to numerous portraits of the royal family, Krafft created the altar painting of Kalmar Cathedral . For his services to the royal family, Queen Ulrika Eleonore raised him to the nobility in 1719 and appointed him court manager for a year .

The lexicon Nordisk familjebok describes his art in volume 14 from 1911 as follows:

"Von Krafft assumed Ehrenstahl's attitude, but with a stricter drawing and with calmer colors ... later his colors darkened and his coloring received an urge towards gray-green with the shadows falling heavy and hard ... many of his later works seem cold and carelessly executed . "

Today Krafft's paintings can be found in the Swedish National Museum , Malmöhus , Gothenburg Art Museum and Gripsholm Castle . Among Krafft's numerous students are Gustaf Lundberg (1695–1786), Olof Arenius (1701–1766), Georg Engelhard Schröder , Lorenz Pasch the Elder , Johan Henrik Scheffel , Johan David Swartz (1678–1729) and probably Georg Lisiewski (1674–1729) 1750).
