Lorenz (also Lorentz or Lorens) Pasch was the son of the Lübeck painter Danckwardt Pasch and his wife Judith Larsdotter. He first learned from the Hamburg painter David von Krafft (1655–1724) before he went to London in 1721 for further training . The city was a magnet for artists from Sweden at the time. Pasch stayed in England for seven years and studied painting with the well-known Swedish artist Michael Dahl (around 1659–1743).

In 1728, after the death of his father, Pasch returned to Sweden, where he quickly established himself as a respected portrait painter of the aristocracy . In 1730 he married Anna Helena Beckman. Their children Ulrika Pasch (1735–1796) and Lorenz Pasch the Younger (1733–1805) learned painting from their father and both became highly esteemed artists. Pasch's brother Johan was also able to celebrate great success in the Swedish art scene.

In later years, Pasch especially Olof Arenius (1701–1766) and Gustaf Lundberg (1695–1786) contested his position as the leading portraitist in Swedish society. In the last years of his life, Lorenz Pasch's success declined noticeably. Cared for by his daughter, he died in Stockholm in 1766.
