Johan Henrik Scheffel

Johan Henrik Scheffel (born April 9, 1690 in Wismar , † December 21, 1781 in Västerås ) was a Swedish baroque portrait and miniature painter.

Life

Scheffel received his training in Germany, France and the Netherlands as well as with the great Swedish portrait painter David von Krafft († 1724) in Stockholm , where Scheffel settled in 1723 and worked until 1765. He became a member of the drawing academy in 1735 and was awarded the title of director in 1763. In 1765 he moved to Västerås, where he lived until his death. According to his biographer, later director of the Göteborg City Museum Stig Roth (1900–1972), about 675 portraits of people from the Swedish nobility, clergy, scientists and the military were known or attributed to him in 1936 for his creative phase from 1724 to 1771 Usually not signed. Roth describes the decade of the 1730s as Scheffel's most high-quality creative period. His portraits are in numerous Swedish museums, castles ( Gripsholm Castle is said to have the most extensive collection of his paintings), churches and secular public buildings, but also in private family ownership. Per Krafft the elder was his pupil.
