Per Krafft the elder

Per Krafft the Elder (born January 16, 1724 in Arboga , † November 7, 1793 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish painter.

He was a pupil of Johan Henrik Scheffel (1690–1781) in Copenhagen until 1747 and then of Carl Gustaf Pilo .

Through Pilo he met the finance minister Otto Thott , for whom he made several portraits. In 1755 Thott sent him with a commission to Paris, where they were to copy 200 paintings by artists such as Rigaud , Largillière and Mignard . There he was a student of Alexander Roslin , but he was more drawn to the work of Chardin and Greuze .

On Roslin's recommendation, he became professor of painting at the Academy of Liberal Arts in Bayreuth in September 1762 . For seven hours a week (three in life drawing based on a living model with muscle theory and four painting lessons) he received a salary of 640 fl . There he painted Elisabeth Friederike Sophie von Brandenburg-Bayreuth .

After the death of Margrave Friedrich in February 1763, he stayed in Bayreuth and painted the life-size portrait of Minister Friedrich Wilhelm Ellrodt . The city of Bayreuth gave it to King Ferdinand of Bulgaria. After studying in Italy in 1764/65, he returned to Bayreuth.

In 1767 he became court painter to Stanislaus II August Poniatowski in Warsaw .

After his return to Stockholm in 1768 he became a member and professor at the Kungliga Akademien för de fria konsterna in 1773 and still painted well over 100 portraits.

In 1775 he married Maria Wilhelmina Ekebom. Her son Per Krafft the Younger became a portrait and history painter and her daughter Wilhelmina Krafft (1778–1828) a miniature painter.
