Carl Gustaf Pilo
Carl Gustaf Pilo (born March 5, 1711 in Gaarden Göksäter in the municipality of Runtuna in Södermanland near Nyköping , † March 2, 1793 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish-Danish portrait painter.
Life
Pilo was the son of the painter Olof Pilo (also Pijhlou , 1668–25 July 1753), who originally came from Poland, and his wife Beata (née Sahlstedt). After first attending school in Nyköping, he was sent to Stockholm at the age of twelve. Here he was taught by the painter Kristofer Christman. He went on a trip to Vienna and on his return became a student at the newly established painting and sculpture academy in Stockholm. In his work he was influenced by the painter Olof Arenius . Between 1734 and 1736 he traveled to Germany and Austria. Since he could not afford to live in Stockholm financially, he moved on to Skåne around 1737 , where he received orders for portraits from the noble houses. His portraits of landowners were created there until 1740. From there he moved to Copenhagen and became a professor at the Old Art Academy in 1748 and at the new Royal Danish Art Academy in 1754 , of which he became director in 1771. Pilo fell out of favor in 1772 in the dispute over Johann Friedrich Struensee at the Danish court and had to leave Denmark. At the beginning of the reign of Gustaf III. he returned to his homeland and first went to Nyköping. In 1773 he became an honorary member of the Stockholm Art Academy and in 1778 its director.
The
Pilo family had a younger brother Jöns Pilo (1707–1793) and was married twice with no children
- with Eva Maria (nee Malmgren) from whom he was divorced in 1747 because she lived in bigamy
- since 1749 with Charlotta Amalia Dorotea (née De Maré)
Works (selection)
- Cain och Abel (Cain and Abel)
- En skomakarefamilj (a shoemaker family)
- La Charité romaine
His colossal main work Gustaf III's kröningstafla about the coronation of King Gustaf III. remained unfinished.
