David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl (born September 23, 1629 in Hamburg , † 1698 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish painter . He is called the "father of Swedish painting".

Life

Like many of his contemporaries, David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl studied painting in the Netherlands . Around 1652 he came to Sweden in the wake of the Swedish Marshal Carl Gustav Wrangel . He was sponsored by Queen Hedvig Eleonora, wife of King Charles X Gustav , who made it possible for him to study in Italy . After he had also visited the French and English courts, he returned to Stockholm in 1661, where he received the title hovkonterfejare ("court portrait painter"). He received a large number of assignments that he could only cope with with the help of staff. In 1674 he was ennobled.

David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl mainly painted portraits, but also representative splendid paintings and animal pictures. Its splendid baroque style satisfied the need for representation of the then young Swedish great power.

His painting Glorious exploits of Swedish kings , which can be seen in Drottningholm Palace , was featured on Sweden's largest postage stamp by engraver Czesław Słania in 2000 .
