Juanjuí is the capital of the Mariscal Cáceres province in central northern Peru in the San Martín region . It is the administrative seat of the district of the same name . The 2017 census counted 28,453 inhabitants, 10 years earlier the number of inhabitants was 23,441.

Geographical location

Located at an altitude of 283  m on the left bank of the Río Huallaga , the city is located in the eastern foothills of the Peruvian Central Cordillera . Juanjuí is 535 km north of the state capital Lima . Juanjuí Airport ( IATA airport code : JJI) is located in the urban area . In the surrounding area are the national parks Río Abiseo and Cordillera Azul as well as the archaeological site of Gran Pajatén .
