Lamas is a small town in the San Martín region of northern Peru , 22 km from Tarapoto . Lamas is the administrative seat of the Lamas province and the Lamas district of the same name . The 2017 census counted 11,165 inhabitants. Ten years earlier the population was 8883. The city is located at an altitude of 809  m in a basin landscape between the Peruvian central and eastern Cordillera .

The inhabitants are called lamistas . The indigenous population speaks the so-called Lamas Quechua . Genetic analyzes suggest that the inhabitants immigrated from the Amazon region. The traditional houses in Wayku district have no windows. The residents believe that this can prevent evil spirits from entering the house.
