Rolf Herings

Rolf Herings (born July 10, 1940 in Rheydt ; † September 29, 2017 ) was a German athlete and football coach .

Career

Herings made an athletic appearance as a track and field athlete at Bayer 04 Leverkusen . On September 22, 1961, he set a German record in javelin throwing 82.48 m, which lasted for six years. At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 , he finished seventh with 74.25 m. In 1961 and 1965 he became the German javelin thrower. With a height of 1.81 m, he had a competition weight of 86 kg.

The qualified sports teacher has been a teacher of athletics at the German Sport University Cologne (Institute for Motor Skills and Movement Technology) since 1962 . From 1966 to 1968 he was the national women's javelin coach.

During his time at 1. FC Köln , where he had been employed since 1969 (with the exception of the 1972/73 season, during which he was Gero Bisanz's assistant coach at Bayer 04 Leverkusen ), he held various positions from fitness coach to co -Trainer to goalkeeping coach . In the latter capacity, he formed and looked after the national goalkeepers Toni Schumacher and Bodo Illgner and has since been considered one of the best goalkeeping coaches in Germany. He jumped in as coach twice at FC when, after the dismissals of Gyula Lóránt (1972) and Karl-Heinz Heddergott (1980), there were still no successors. In the second half of the 2011/12 season , Herings acted again as an additional assistant trainer under Frank Schäfer and supported the training in the 1. FC Köln's youth performance center until summer 2017.

Herings died after a short, serious illness at the age of 77. On October 9, 2017, he was buried in the main municipal cemetery in Mönchengladbach .
