Christian Adolf Schreyer (born July 9, 1828 in Frankfurt am Main , † July 29, 1899 in Kronberg im Taunus ) was a German animal , landscape and genre painter .

Schreyer was born as the son of the wine merchant Peter Schreyer from Speyer and his wife Maria Salome. He came to the Städelsche Kunstinstitut at the age of 15 and became a student there together with Anton Burger , Jakob Maurer and Philipp Rumpf . a. by Jakob Becker and Johann David Passavant . Schreyer studied in Frankfurt am Main until 1854, interrupted by a few stays at the art academies in Düsseldorf , Munich and Stuttgart . He attended the Düsseldorf Academy in 1848. There he was a student in Theodor Hildebrandt's painting class . In 1854, Schreyer left his hometown and joined the Austrian army as a volunteer in the Crimean War until 1856 . He then acted as a travel companion for Prince Emmerich von Thurn und Taxis on his journey through Hungary, Romania and Russia.

In 1856 Schreyer went to Paris , the following year to Bucharest and returned to his regiment for some time. At the end of 1857 Schreyer returned to Frankfurt and also visited his friends in the Kronberg painters' colony . From here he made a long trip to Paris and Algiers in 1861 . Schreyer lived in Paris from the winter of 1861/62. He stayed in France continuously until 1870, only interrupted by a few trips to the Middle East. Similar to his contemporary Eugen Bracht , he turned at times to orientalism , which contributed significantly to his fame.

In 1872 Schreyer bought a house in Kronberg and lived the summers in Taunus and winters in Paris until the end of his life. In 1895 he was made an honorary citizen of the city of Kronberg. He died in 1899 at the age of 71. In the same year, the National Gallery in Berlin exhibited 150 of his works on the occasion of a memorial exhibition.
