Institut du monde arabe
The Institut du monde arabe (IMA) (German: "Institute of the Arab World") is located in the 5th arrondissement of Paris . It was founded in 1980 to promote understanding between France and the Arab world.
aims
The IMA has three stated goals:
- Developing and deepening the study, knowledge and understanding of the Arab world, its language, its civilization and its development efforts
- cultural exchange, communication and cooperation between France and the Arab world, especially in the fields of science and technology
- Promote relations between the Arab world and France as well as Europe
history
It was founded under French law in Paris in 1980 at the instigation of then President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing and built in 1987 during François Mitterrand's presidency at a different location than the site originally planned in the 15th arrondissement. The project was realized by the French architectural group Jean Nouvel , Pierre Soria and Architecture Studio. It has been open to the public since December 1987. In his opening speech on November 30, 1987, Mitterrand placed the cultural aspect in the foreground, a focus that continues to be supported by numerous exhibitions and an extensive library.
architecture
The intercultural institute made Jean Nouvel internationally known. In 1989, Nouvel received the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture for the design of the institute .
On the southern facade, the incidence of sunlight is regulated by thousands of iris diaphragms behind the glass facade, which are computer-controlled and open and close steplessly. In these artfully structured panels, arranged in an even row, Nouvel resorted to the motif of the Maschrabiyya from Arab architecture and thus achieved a synthesis of traditional ornamentation and high-tech architecture.
The following rooms are located in the building: language laboratory, library, cinema, art shop, restaurant with a view of Paris and a smoking room.
