Syvert Nicolaas Bastert (born January 7, 1854 in Maarsseveen , † April 18, 1939 in Loenen aan de Vecht ) was a Dutch landscape painter and draftsman.

Bastert was born into a prominent family on the Otterspoor estate in Maarseveen. Initially he worked in the office of his father's trading company, Jacob Nicolaas Bastert, in Amsterdam . In the studio of Marinus Heijl (1835–1931) he met the young painter Geo Poggenbeek (1853–1903) around 1870 , with whom he remained a lifelong friend. During this time he definitely decided to paint and began his studies in 1876 at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. He received drawing lessons and anatomy from August Allebé and aesthetics from the art critic Joseph Alberdingk Thijm (1820–1889).

In 1878 Bastert took a winter course at the Koninklijke Akademie voor schone kunsten in Antwerp with Charles Verlat , where he met Hein Kever (1854–1922) and Theo Hanrath (1853–1883). He then traveled with Poggenbeek through Switzerland , Italy and France .

Between 1880 and 1882, Poggenbeek and Bastert lived and worked in Amsterdam in the Poggenbeek studio near the Oosterpark. In 1882 Bastert moved into his own studio in The Hague. However, over the next seven years they often traveled together to a house in Breukelen to paint the Dutch landscape. Bastert's style was heavily influenced by the painters of the Hague School .

During his stay in The Hague, Bastert often felt lonely. In 1885, he therefore moved to the Poggenbeek studio in a studio in Amsterdam's Oosterpark state. Later, after his marriage to Eva Versteeg, he settled on the Zwaanvecht estate in Nigtevecht . In the first decades of the 20th century he often painted in the painter's village of Heeze .

Bastert won gold medals at exhibitions in Amsterdam, Munich and Paris . He was a member of " Arti et Amicitiae " in Amsterdam and the " Pulchri Studio " in The Hague, ..
