Charles Verlat

Michel Marie Charles Verlat (born November 24, 1824 in Antwerp , † October 23, 1890 there ) was a Belgian painter.

At the Antwerp Art Academy , Verlat a. a. Student of Nicaise de Keyser . With his support he was later able to study in Paris . Its reputation justified the picture "Au loup" (1861 at the Antwerp exhibition), which shows a fight between a farmer and a wolf.

In addition to the animal picture, he later also cultivated history painting . His main works in this field are: “The capture of Jerusalem by Godfrey of Bouillon ” (in the Museum in Brussels), “The Wedding at Cana ”, “Mourning for the body of Christ” and “Mary with the four evangelists”, which is distinguished by its noble composition “(Antwerp Museum).
Of his animal pictures, some of which are dramatic, some humorous scenes with great natural truth, are to be emphasized: "Lion hunt", "Fight for the prey", "Bad neighborhood", "Flock of sheep with shepherd girl", "Expectation of the Lord" or "Monkey, shaving in front of the mirror ”.

In 1869 Verlat was appointed professor at the Grand Ducal Saxon Art School in Weimar , but after a few years he resigned and became professor at the Antwerp Academy. His former student Henry van de Velde became the founder of the Weimar School of Applied Arts in 1907 .

A trip to the Orient undertaken in 1875 gave him the material for pictures from people's life in Palestine . His paintings are distinguished by their broad brushwork and strong coloring.

Charles Verlat died four weeks before his 66th birthday on October 23, 1890 and was buried in the Schoonselhof cemetery in Antwerp.
