Schoonselhof
The Schoonselhof is a cemetery in Antwerp , Belgium , located in the Hoboken and Wilrijk districts . The Schoonselhof is also called the “ Père Lachaise of Antwerp” because of its elaborate grave monuments and the famous personalities who found their final resting place here .
history
In 1911, the city of Antwerp acquired the Schoonselhof estate on the initiative of the then alder for culture, Frans van Kuyck , in order to set up a cemetery there. The official opening took place on September 1, 1921. After the old Kielkerkhof was closed in 1936, numerous tombs were transferred from there to the Schoonselhof in 1938.
