Henri de Braekeleer
Henri de Braekeleer (born June 11, 1840 in Antwerp , † July 20, 1888 there ) was a Flemish painter.
Life
Henri and his brother Ferdinand (1828–1857) apprenticed to their father, the history and genre painter Ferdinand de Braekeleer the Elder (1792–1883), and their uncle Hendrik Leys . From 1854 to 1867 Henri de Braekeleer studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, where he made friends with Jan Stobbaerts . The uncle initiated his nephew Henri and his friend into the romanticized, transfigured view of the works of Gustave Wappers and the classicism of François-Joseph Navez (1787–1869) and encouraged the two young people to oppose the outdated academic training. In 1863, the uncle encouraged the nephew to go on an art trip to Germany and the Netherlands. Henri de Braekeleer was impressed by Pieter de Hoogh , Jan Steen and Vermeer . The masters from the 17th century - especially de Hoogh - were the models for the style of his works until 1870.
In addition to woodcuts and lithographs, 76 etchings by Henri de Braekeleer are known. He mostly painted interiors, views from Antwerp windows, still lifes and landscapes. His work - recently also Impressionist - can be seen in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp , in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Brussels and in the Musée des Beaux-Arts (Tournai) .
From 1880 to 1884 Henri de Braekeleer suffered from a serious mental disorder . He found his final resting place on the Schoonselhof (Park Z1, row A).
