history

Edouard Manet: Argenteuil

The collection of the Belgian painter, patron and art collector Henri van Cutsem (1839–1904) forms the core of the Musée des Beaux-Arts. His heir, the sculptor Guillaume Charlier (1854–1958) bequeathed this collection to the city of Tournai, where it was exhibited in the town hall from 1905 onwards. The First World War initially delayed a solution to better present the works of art. The inauguration of the museum, designed by the Art Nouveau architect Victor Horta , took place on June 17, 1928 . In addition to the van Cutsem collection, older holdings from the city of Tournai and later other donations also came to the museum.
