Franz Courtens
Franz Courtens (born February 4, 1854 in Dendermonde , † January 2, 1943 in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode ) was a Belgian landscape painter and art teacher.
Courtens began his artistic training at the Art Academy of Dendermonde with the landscape painters Jacques Rosseels (1828–1912), Isidore Meyers (1836–1916) and Franz Vinck (1827–1903). He spent the year 1873 in Antwerp. In 1874 he settled in Brussels, where he attended the free art school "La Patte de Dindon" in the evenings.
His meeting with Hippolyte Boulenger and the School of Tervuren encouraged him to paint outdoors . In 1884 he received a 3rd class medal in the Salon of the Société des Artistes Français and a Grand Prix at the Paris World Exhibition in 1889 .
In 1903 he was appointed professor of landscape painting at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten van Antwerpen . In 1904 he was elected a member of the Académie royale des Sciences, des Lettres et des Beaux-Arts de Belgique .
In 1922, King Albert I gave him the title of baron .
