Hippolyte Boulenger (born December 3, 1837 in Tournai , † July 4, 1874 in Brussels ) was a Belgian landscape painter . He founded the artists' colony of the École de Tervueren .

Life

He was born to French-speaking parents in Tournai. Boulenger came from difficult circumstances. He spent his childhood in Tournai. His family moved with him to Paris, where he stayed from 1850 to 1853. There he received his first drawing lessons. In 1853 he came to Brussels. There he worked as a decorator in Hubert Colleye's workshop . At this time he also took evening courses at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxuelles with Joseph Quinaux .

In Tervuren he first met Camille Van Camp in 1863 , who discovered him and became his supporter and mentor. In the same year he exhibited in the Brussels Salon. In 1866 he became a member of the Brussels Salon together with Jules Raeymaekers . In 1868 he married and moved to Zaventem , but returned to Tervuren in 1870. His best and most fruitful years would follow.

Following one of his proposals, the Société Libre des Beaux-Arts , an association of independent artists in Belgium, was created. Its full members were Alfred Verwee , Félicien Rops , and Constantin Meunier . Honorary members were Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and Jean-François Millet .

He died in a hotel in Brussels in 1874. He had suffered from epilepsy since 1869 , which, along with his alcohol abuse, led to his early death.

His first pictures are characterized by dark coloring , as was common for the first generation of his school, which was close to realism . Later they developed in the direction of Impressionism and at the end of his career he anticipated parts of Expressionism , actually a movement of the 20th century. He is said to have recognized expressionist painting as modern in the Brussels Salon of all places, an outstanding advocate of academic painting , which he otherwise rejected.

For a while, Jean-François Millet was his favorite role model. However, it gradually approached Corot, which is why it is also called Corot of Belgium . The time from 1870 is considered to be the best time of his work.

His works can be found in the museums of Antwerp , Brussels , Ixelles , Mons , the Musée Charlier in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode / Sint-Joost-ten-Node , Saint-Nicolas , Tervuren , Tournai and Verviers .

Several well-known painters of the time gathered around him and Camille van Camp near Brussels in this artist colony, although Boulenger remained one of the most successful due to his plenary pictures .
