Loenen ( ) is a former municipality in the province of Utrecht . Their total area was 27.32 km². At the time of the dissolution it had 8,562 inhabitants.
history
The municipality included the villages of Loenen aan de Vecht (which was first documented in 953 ), Vreeland, Nieuwersluis and Nigtevecht.
Since January 1, 2011 Loenen has been part of the newly formed Stichtse Vecht community .
Location
The area of the former municipality is halfway between Amsterdam and Utrecht and is crossed by the motorway between these two cities. The railway also runs through Loenen, but there is no train station. Most residents commute to work in Amsterdam, Hilversum or Utrecht; others live from tourism or are farmers.
Surname
Loenen was near a Loh (forest). Old Dutch “lona” is probably a locative of the word Loh and means: at or near the forest.
Loenense Tijd
The meridian , which since March 17, 1937, was decisive for the Amsterdam time (AZ) used in the Netherlands from 1909 to 1940 (5 ° east longitude ), ran exactly through Loenen aan de Vecht. Therefore one spoke of the Loenense Tijd (Loenen time).
