Matthias Moder throws a new GDR record on June 11, 1985 with 80.92 m

Matthias Moder (born June 17, 1963 in Torgau ) is a former athlete who was hammer throw champion of the German Democratic Republic in 1985 .

Matthias Moder took third place in the GDR championships in 1981 behind Roland Steuk and Tobias Stopat. From 1982 to 1984 he ranked fourth to fifth at the championships. On June 11, 1985, Moder exceeded the 80-meter mark in Halle for the first time and improved Detlef Gerstenberg's GDR record . In 1985 he achieved a distance of more than 80 meters in five competitions, on August 3rd he finished second with 80.68 m in Dresden behind Gunther Rodehau , who replaced him as the GDR record holder with 82.74 m. On August 9th he threw 80.04 m in Leipzig and won his only GDR championship, with Gunther Rodehau and Ralf Haber on the courts . At the European Athletics Cup , Moder took third place with 77.88 m.

At the 1986 European Championships in Stuttgart, the field was divided into three classes. In the first three places were the representatives of the Soviet Union with widths of 82 meters and more, in positions four to nine with widths between 79.84 m and 75.36 m were the throwers from the two German states, followed by the representatives of the other countries. Jurij Sedych won with a world record of 86.74 m one meter ahead of Sergei Litvinow and Igor Nikulin threw exactly 82 meters. Moder finished seventh at his only major international championships with 78.70 m, four centimeters behind Ralf Haber.

Matthias Moder started for SC Dynamo Berlin . The trained car mechanic was 1.84 m tall and weighed 110 kg in competition.
