Fredrik Samuelsson (born February 16, 1995 in Hässelby-Vällingby , Stockholm ) is a Swedish athlete who competes in the decathlon .

Life

Fredrik Samuelsson comes from a sporty family. His father was, like him, a decathlete, his mother competed in the hurdles. He has a younger brother and a younger sister. He is still trained today by his father, together with Yannick Tregaro. Fredrik started playing football at Hässelby SK in his hometown when he was six. Shortly afterwards, he also started athletics, initially in his mother's former club, Sundbybergs IK . When he was eight he switched to athletics at his home club, for which he still competes today. In the early stages of his sporting career, however, the focus was initially on football for some time, where he was very successful in his youth. It was not until 2011 that he decided to concentrate completely on athletics.

Athletic career

In 2011 he competed in the U18 Nordic Championships in Sipoo, Finland in the decathlon, which he finished in seventh place. This was his first ever athletics competition. In 2013 he won the silver medal in the heptathlon at the Swedish U20 indoor championships. In the summer he competed in the decathlon at the U20 European Championships in Rieti, where he finished seventh with 7542 points. In 2014 he then competed in the U20 World Championships in Eugene, where he finished 12th. In September he became the Swedish U20 champion. In spring 2015 Samuelsson first won silver in the heptathlon at the Swedish indoor championships. He then went to the U23 European Championships in Tallinn. There he finished fifth with 7884 points. In September he became the first Swedish decathlon champion.

In 2016 he took part in international adult championships for the first time at the European Championships in Amsterdam. With his season best of 7,875 points, he finished tenth. In 2017 he competed at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade, where he finished fifth. In July he started at the U23 European Championships in Bydgoszcz. Before that he had exceeded the 8000 point mark for the first time in May at the all-around meeting in Götzis. He succeeded again at the European Championships, with which he won the silver medal. The 8172 points from Götzis are still his best performance today. At the season's highlight, the World Championships in London, he could not finish the competition and had to give up after the fourth discipline, the high jump. In 2018 he finished ninth at the European Championships in Berlin.

In 2019, Samuelsson first appeared at the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow. After new best performances in two disciplines on the first day he was able to set up a personal best in the heptathlon with 6125 points after the second day, with which he finished fourth. In October he started at the World Championships in Doha. With 7860 points he landed in 15th place at the finish.
