Manfred Klaus Walter Grieser (born May 9, 1938 in Bunitz , Delitzsch district ) is a former athlete who was champion of the German Democratic Republic in the discus throw in 1957 and 1959 .

Manfred Grieser won his first GDR championship title at the age of nineteen. In October 1957 he set his first GDR record with 52.51 m. In 1958, Grieser took second place behind Fritz Kühl at the GDR championships . After Grieser had regained Fritz Kühl's GDR record in April 1959, he threw the discus on May 1, 1959 in Markranstädt at 53.42 m. This exceeded the all-German record of 53.10 m set by Willy Schröder in 1935, which at the time had meant a world record. By June 21, 1959, Grieser had increased the German record six times and stood at 55.24 m at the end of June. Grieser won the GDR championship title in 1959, ahead of Fritz Kühl and Lothar Milde . In 1960 Grieser lost to Fritz Kühl at the GDR championships. In qualifying for the all-German team , Kühl, Grieser and Milde prevailed and were allowed to drive to the 1960 Olympic Games . There Grieser reached the preliminary fight and finished in 16th place with 52.69 m. In 1961 Grieser took second place behind Milde at the GDR championships, in 1962 he was third behind Milde and Kühl.

Manfred Grieser started for the SC DHfK Leipzig . He had a competition weight of 88 kg with a height of 1.81 m. In 1962 Manfred Grieser married the discus thrower Irene Schuch , their son Thomas Grieser was East German champion in 1982 for the SC DHfK Leipzig with the 4 x 400 meter relay.

Grieser completed his coaching studies in 1965 and worked as a junior coach at SC DHfK until 1977. From 1977 to 1992 he worked as a qualified sports teacher at the DHfK . Grieser belonged to the statistician commission of the DVfL, after 1990 he was active as a statistician at the regional association Saxony of the DLV . In 1990 Grieser was one of the founding members of the German Society for Athletics Documentation (DGLD), of which he was chairman from 1998 to 2018. Together with Fritz Steinmetz , Grieser published articles on the history of German athletics after 1990, with Grieser each contributing the statistics for the GDR.
