About this picture

Norderstedt is located in the south of Schleswig-Holstein and by number of inhabitants of Kiel , Lübeck , Flensburg and Neumünster the fifth largest city in the northernmost German state .

Norderstedt, which was founded on January 1, 1970, is the largest city in the Segeberg district and in 2005 received the status of a large district town . In terms of area, Norderstedt now ranks sixth among the cities of Schleswig-Holstein after Lübeck, Fehmarn , Kiel, Neumünster and Brunsbüttel .

geography

The city belongs to the metropolitan area of Hamburg ( metropolitan region Hamburg ) and borders several northern districts of the Hanseatic city: Niendorf , Langenhorn , Fuhlsbüttel , Hummelsbüttel , Poppenbüttel , Lemsahl-Mellingstedt and Duvenstedt .

From Norderstedt you can reach the state capital Kiel in around 40-60 minutes by car, the North or Baltic Sea in around 90 minutes and the center of Hamburg in 30 minutes. Due to the city's proximity to Hamburg, there are some special features. Some streets run right across the city and state borders while retaining the name and continuing the numbering. Norderstedt also has the same phone code as Hamburg (040). In the old four-digit postcode system (1961–1993), the postcode of Hamburg (2000) also applied to Norderstedt. Unique in Germany, there is a weekly market in the Ochsenzoll quarter that goes beyond the city limits, but also across the state border Schleswig-Holstein / Hamburg.

history

Danish customs house from 1840

The southern Holstein area, in which Norderstedt is located with its four communities of origin, has been part of the Holy Roman Empire of the German nation since the Middle Ages . With the Treaty of Ripen in 1460, the country was under the sovereignty of the Danish king as Duke of Holstein; in the 18th century it became part of the entire Danish state . In the years 1865/66 it came under the administration of Austria , and after that it became a rural municipality area of the Prussian province of Schleswig-Holstein . After the Second World War , the area belongs to the state of Schleswig-Holstein.

The city of Norderstedt was January 1, 1970 against strong resistance from the previous communities through the merger of the Hamburg suburb municipalities Garstedt and Friedrichsgabe (both previously Pinneberg ) with Harksheide and glassworks (both previously Stormarn ) was founded. These had increased sharply in the 1940s due to Hamburg evacuated by bombs and the influx of refugees from the East German areas (mostly East Prussia and Upper Silesia ) as well as due to the later land requirements of the Hamburg population ( suburbanization ). The merger to form the city of Norderstedt was to take place on January 1, 1976 at the request of the four SPD-led communities of origin. However, the CDU government of the state of Schleswig-Holstein disregarded this and ordered the establishment of Norderstedt as early as January 1, 1970. To find the city name, discussions were held about Holstein (in Schleswig-Holstein as a counterpoint to Schleswig), Süderstedt (because in South of Schleswig-Holstein) and Norderstedt (north of the regional metropolis Hamburg). Norderstedt was already the project name for an influx and residential area for refugees from East Germany, which was supported by several surrounding communities and was created on the former military training area in Harksheide (Falkenberg). The term was also used for a much larger area north of Hamburg including Quickborn and Henstedt-Ulzburg. Since the district committees of Stormarn and Pinneberg could not agree on the administration, the Schleswig-Holstein state government assigned the city of Norderstedt to the Segeberg district. The first mayor of the new city was Horst Embacher . The last lawsuit by the previous municipalities against the founding of the city was only rejected by the Federal Constitutional Court on December 16, 1969. There were no celebrations for the founding of the city.

On January 1, 2005, the city of Norderstedt received the status of a large district city due to the steadily growing population .

Districts

From an administrative point of view, Norderstedt is not divided into districts. The residential areas described below refer to the former municipalities before the merger to form the city of Norderstedt and the new district "Mitte".

Garstedt

Old Garstedt town hall

Garstedt was first mentioned in a document in 1370, the document mentioned comes from the archives of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce . Garstedt is the oldest and economically strongest district. Originally located on the western edge of the Harksheidemoor, the farmers benefited from a significantly better soil quality than in the neighboring villages.

In the course of the coupling (a comprehensive land reform) in 1794, Garstedt (also called Garstedter Hagen ) expanded to include Garstedter Feld (today the region around Garstedter Feldstrasse and Kohfurth ). In this region, the poorer villagers settled who lived mainly from peat extraction , worked as simple craftsmen or as day laborers. After that, the ascent to a craft location began. In 1887 the first windmill was built ( at Möhlenbarg ) and in 1889 Garstedt and Harksheide became an independent parish with a small architectural ensemble of church, pastorate and cemetery on the site between Kirchenstrasse 12 and Ochsenzoller Strasse 43. At the turn of the century, 1900 1327 inhabitants were already counted. The first church building in the still young Christ parish in Garstedt was erected in 1906. The Art Nouveau building, which is very appealing from the outside, was demolished in the 1960s in favor of a much larger church and replaced by a simple clinker brick building (design: Joachim Matthaei (1911–1999)) with a separate church tower. By 1939, the number of residents had almost quadrupled to 4,869.

The Ochsenzoll , a customs border between Hamburg and the county of Holstein Schauenburg, was of great importance for the region from the beginning . From the 15th to the early 19th century, oxen were driven on the north-south trade route from Jutland through the Harksheidemoor, which until then had formed the largest heather and moorland landscape in Holstein. The oxen had to be cleared through customs at the border with the city-state of Hamburg. Until 1840 customs were paid in Garstedt (at the end of Ulzburger Straße ), then in a customs station in Harksheide (at the beginning of Langenhorner Chaussee ). Street names such as Schmuggelstieg nearby are still a reminder today. When Schleswig-Holstein got the status of a Prussian province in 1867, the customs station was closed.

The trade route, on which the oxen had been driven through the Harksheidemoor since the 15th century, also formed the border between the sovereign offices of Pinneberg to the west , to which Garstedt belonged, and Tremsbüttel to the east , to which today's Norderstedt district of Harksheide belonged . The route remains as an administrative border between Garstedt / Friedrichsgabe (Pinneberg district) and Harksheide (Stormarn district) until the city was founded in 1970. At that time Garstedt had 21,184 inhabitants (for comparison in 1957: 10,012 Ew.).

Harksheide

Harksheide was first mentioned in a document in 1374. The area of today's district is located directly northeast of the Ochsenzoll . Until 1876, Harksheide belonged to the Tangstedt estate and was a Vorwerk of Tremsbüttel until it became its own estate in 1693. It then became a Prussian rural community in the Stormarn district . As part of the introduction of the Prussian municipal constitution , the village was assigned to the Tangstedt district in 1889 .

Due to the long administrative affiliation to Tangstedt (Stormarn) , Harksheide had not developed a town center, but only formed a loose collection of buildings from the beginning. Documents from the 19th century refer to the village as a settlement rather than a village. In addition to agriculture, peat extraction formed the livelihood of the population. Towards the end of the 19th century the population decreased steadily, a trend that could only be reversed with the connection to Hamburg's local transport.

With the construction of the Langenhorn Railway up to the Ochsenzoll, Harksheide developed into a Hamburg suburb. Due to the increase in population - the place already had 2800 inhabitants in 1939 - Harksheide became an unofficial municipality in 1938.

From 1934 to 1939 the Zionist youth organization “Hechaluz” (Hebrew: the pioneer) ran an agricultural training center (see Hachschara ) on the “Brüderhof” north of Harksheide , in which young Jews were prepared for emigration to Palestine and work in the kibbutz . For the Jews this was an opportunity to escape the increasing reprisals in the German Reich . For the National Socialist regime, it was a measure that pushed the expulsion of the Jews forward.

After the Second World War , the population doubled due to the influx of bombed-out Hamburgers and displaced persons. From 1955, the Falkenberg garden city and the Stonsdorf industrial park (settlement of a herbal liqueur factory from Stonsdorf in Silesia, cf. Stonsdorfer ) were built on the site of the former SS training and shooting range . On January 1, 1970, Harksheide went up in the newly founded town of Norderstedt and thus also moved to the Segeberg district . At that time Harksheide had around 20,000 inhabitants.

With the construction of the "Gartenstadt Falkenberg", Harksheide received a center, the Harksheider Market in the immediate vicinity of the Harksheide Church, built in the 1950s. The Harksheider Town Hall was built on this market, which was also the town hall of Norderstedt until the Norderstedt town hall was built in the new center in the 1980s. Various shops settled around the town hall and a weekly market was established to meet the daily needs of the growing town.

Glassworks

Wittmoor

Glashütte originally belonged to the Tangstedt Chancellery under the name "Tangstedter Heide" (Stormarn district). It consisted of individual farms on the property. This had a glassworks built in the Glasmoor around 1740 , but its operation had to be closed again in 1774. In 1876 Tangstedterheide became an independent rural community from the chancellery, which came to the Tangstedt district as part of the introduction of the Prussian municipal constitution . In addition to agriculture, the village lived economically from the peat removal of the Glasmoor and Wittmoor moors, some of which are located in the municipal area , so in 1869 a pressed peat factory was opened. In 1896 the name was changed to Glashütte to reflect the independence in the name. In 1917 Hamburg bought the Glasmoor in order to set up a correctional facility there ( JVA Glasmoor , opened in 1922), the inmates of which were used to mine peat . With the extension of the Hamburger Hochbahn from Ohlsdorf via Langenhorn to Ochsenzoll, the population increase began in 1921, which led to a population of 1,300 inhabitants by the start of the war in 1939. From March to October 1933, one of the first concentration camps installed after the NSDAP came to power , the Wittmoor concentration camp , existed in Glashütte im Wittmoor : 140 opponents of the National Socialist regime were held there, harassed and forced to work in peat cutting. After the Second World War, Glashütte initially belonged to the Tangstedt district in the Stormarn district, before it opened up in the newly founded town of Norderstedt on January 1, 1970 and thus also moved to the Segeberg district. Glashütte then had 6,800 inhabitants.

A history trail with 17 signs has been leading through the district since 2014 .

Frederick gift

Friedrichsgabe is the youngest of the four villages that were combined to form Norderstedt. It was only founded in 1821 by Johann Daniel Lawaetz , a manufacturer and dealer from Altona as a poor colony . Lawaetz received the land on the Pinneberger Harksheide from the sovereign Friedrich (Frederik) VI. , Danish King and Duke of Holstein. In memory of the king's generosity, the new town was named Frederiksgabe .

Settlement began with twenty poor families from Altona; According to the basic idea of the project, they should live from agriculture and no longer depend on alms and support. Since the heather was not very productive, the settlers were dependent on additional sources of income from the start. As in the neighboring towns, peat extraction was an option. The peat was brought to Hamburg in a high-wheeled cart (so-called Steertpoggkarren) and sold there. On the way back, the city's rubbish was taken away and distributed on the Friedrichsgaber fields as fertilizer. Poaching and smuggling to Hamburg were also sources of income in the impoverished project. In 1873 the project was declared a failure and officially ended. The Frederiksgabe settlement was merged with the neighboring Meeschensee , Haslohfurth and Dreibeken settlements to form the Prussian community of Friedrichsgabe. Around 1900 only about 400 people lived in Friedrichsgabe.

The Moorbek , a left tributary of the Mühlenau , has its source in Friedrichsgabe .

The Johanneskirche was built in 1966 . Since 2008, a history trail with eleven signs has been leading through the district.

Norderstedt-Center

In the geographical center of the four municipalities of Garstedt, Friedrichsgabe, Harksheide and Glashütte, which were merged in 1970 , a new city center was built in the 1980s and 1990s with Norderstedt-Mitte , which includes residential quarters as well as important administrative, official and municipal buildings such as the Norderstedt town hall . The small shopping center "Moorbek-Passage" offers the most important shopping opportunities for the residents, there is also a cinema and with the U 1 a subway connection to Hamburg (via the Garstedt district) and with the Alsternordbahn A 2 a connection to North via Henstedt-Ulzburg to Neumünster. Since its foundation in spring 1974, the development company Norderstedt mbH (EGNO) has been responsible for the planning and implementation of the project in "development sub-area B" .

Norderstedt-Mitte is now viewed by the population as an independent district, but at the time the four communities were amalgamated, it mostly belonged to Garstedt and a small part to Friedrichsgabe.

coat of arms

The coat of arms was approved on July 17, 1974.

Coat of arms of Norderstedt
Coat of arms of Norderstedt
Blazon : "Square of blue and silver with a red central shield, inside an eight-pointed silver star, the uppermost ray of which is decorated with a silver lily."

The squaring of the coat of arms of Norderstedt refers to the development of the city through the merger of four formerly independent communities. The star represents the new city and its hopeful future. The "northward direction" of this figure, to be interpreted as a compass, by the lily is founded in the name of the municipality and makes the coat of arms a "talking" symbol. The young city of Norderstedt was formed in 1970 from the four communities Friedrichsgabe, Garstedt, Glashütte and Harksheide. Each district is represented by a quarter of the sign. Of these, Garstedt and Harksheide had their own coat of arms before the merger. The significantly greater concentration of settlements along the traffic axis between Hamburg in the south and Kaltenkirchen in the north, which arose especially in the years after the Second World War, was unofficially called "Norderstedt" before the city was founded. The city name indicates the orientation of the inhabitants towards Hamburg: The place is in the south of Schleswig-Holstein, but north of Hamburg. The political affiliation to Schleswig-Holstein is emphasized by the coat of arms colors, which correspond to the state colors.

The use of the coat of arms is only permitted to Norderstedt citizens by a resolution of the main committee in individual cases. This is stipulated in the statutes of the city of Norderstedt. The administration punishes the use of the coat of arms restrictively, for example in citizens' groups. In contrast, Norderstedt Marketing e. V. commissioned and slightly modified in 2004, the city logo can be used largely without restrictions by Norderstedt companies and private individuals.

The city's coat of arms has only been hanging in the plenary hall of the town hall since December 2010. It is a gift from Norderstedt citizens for the 40th anniversary of the city and was designed by the artist and Norderstedt culture award winner Ane Königsbaum.

The coat of arms was designed by the Brunsbüttel heraldist Willy "Horsa" Lippert .
