The Tetenal Europe GmbH emerged from the drug wholesale business (the term " drug " here has still its original meaning) of the Berlin entrepreneur Theodor Teichgräber out that 1847 photographic with the sales process chemicals for the film and image development began. In 1910 the trademark TETENAL was registered for a development concentrate. In 1914 the company was converted into Theodor Teichgraeber Aktiengesellschaft , which was traded on the Berlin Stock Exchange from 1923 and went bankrupt in 1926. The business was continued by a rescue company. The stock corporation was registered in Hamburg until 2012 under the name Tetenal AG. In August 2012 this will be transferred to Tetenal Beteiligungsgesellschaft mbH, based in Norderstedt. After another insolvency in October 2018, the company was taken over by an employee initiative in March 2019 and operates under the name TETENAL 1847 GmbH . The Swiss-based entrepreneur Peter E. Rasenberger is one of the shareholders of TETENAL 1847 GmbH.

Tetenal is one of the most important suppliers of photo chemistry for black and white, but also for the color processes E-6 , C-41 and RA-4 . Well-known products were “Neofin”, a black and white negative developer , and the positive developer “Eukobrom”.

The company has been developing and producing inks and papers for inkjet printers since 1996 .

The company expanded its range to include other chemical and cosmetic products. In addition, the company has become an important international distributor in the imaging and printing market.

The headquarters of the group of companies is in Norderstedt near Hamburg .
