The Landesgartenschau Norderstedt 2011 was the second State Horticultural Show of the State of Schleswig-Holstein and took place in 2011 in the city of Norderstedt .

history

In Norderstedt in 2004 the mayor Hans-Joachim Grote and the CDU parliamentary group spoke out in favor of the garden show. Grote had previously managed the economic planning of the Paderborn State Garden Show in 1994 . In Norderstedt, criticism of the garden show came from the SPD, the Greens (GALiN) and the Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU). The Norderstedt city council decided on September 28, 2004 to hold a state horticultural show. The city then successfully applied to the state to hold the garden show. The garden show was carried out in 2011 by the newly founded Stadtpark Norderstedt GmbH.

For the garden show, three different new parks were created in the existing city park of the Harksheide district in the northeast of Norderstedt:

  • a forest park on 25 hectares,
  • a lake park on 39 hectares including 25 hectares of water
  • and a field park on 8 hectares.

Almost 200,000 flower bulbs, 40,000 perennials, 1,300 roses, 121,000 seedlings and 200 large trees were planted for the garden show. The parks, designed by the Berlin landscape architect Gabriele G. Kiefer , have a network of paths approximately ten kilometers in length and five playgrounds.

Forest park

In the forest park in the north there are renatured heather and peat cut areas . The tree population consists mainly of birch and oak. In between, island-like flower plantings called shrub clearing were created, which thematically relate to mythical creatures. There is also a so-called “green classroom” and a forest stage in the form of an amphitheater , which, depending on the seating, offers space for 700 to 1000 spectators. Various parts of the program will take place on it during the garden show.

Lake park

The Seepark was created in the east of the city park around two former gravel pits with a depth of up to 11 meters. A separating dam between the pits was dismantled in 2009 after lengthy discussions against the concerns of nature conservationists in order to enable the creation of a large natural pool, so that a coherent water surface was created. A path leads around the lake. Most of the new trees at the garden show were planted in the Seepark.

promenade

A lake promenade with 200 new birch, pine and oak trees was laid out for visitors on the west bank. There are large concrete seating steps by the lake. Large “plant boxes” with a variety of gardens were laid out along the promenade. There is also a water playground for children. An inn was open at the lake for the duration of the garden show. The permanent establishment of a catering business, however, has so far failed. The Waldbühne is also located near the promenade.

Flatly

The circular route is around 2.5 kilometers long. The path is divided in two: on the inside it consists of an approx. 110 cm wide concrete path, which is roughened with a broom line in the transverse direction, and on the outside of a gravel path with a water-bound cover . On the outside of the path there are dimmable and colorable LED lights at a distance of approx. 10 m.

In the south, the path leads over a 130-meter-long, 310-cm-wide bridge made of precast concrete, which rests on 26 piers in the lake. There is a climbing frame as a children's playground near the bridge.

Also in the south are twelve massive concrete abutments from the time of National Socialism , which the Wehrmacht used as an abutment for guns when the area was used as a military training area. In the east, the circular route runs parallel to Schleswig-Holstein-Straße. There he climbs up to a small hill on which u. a. three large swings have been erected with a view over the lake. The lido is in the north of the lake.

Lido

A swimming area of 25,000 m² is available for the lido. A beach area of approx. 4,000 m² was heaped up on the shore. Sand has also been floated up in the lake to enable bathing in a shallow area of the shore. Changing rooms are available at the lido. A café was also set up during the exhibition. Bathing was free for visitors to the 2011 exhibition, and in the following years there was a change to a paid bathing facility. On the other bank areas of the lake, reed grass was partially planted, also because there should not be bathed.

Field park

The field park is located in the southwest of the city park. In addition to the existing Norderstedter arboretum , a new fruit tree arboretum was planted in spring 2009 with 52 trees belonging to 32 native apple, pear, cherry and plum tree varieties. They should bear fruit from 2011. In addition to native birch stands, exotic varieties of birch have been planted. For the garden show, more than ten thematic assortment gardens with various types of flowers have been created. Some of the gardens have the motto "Film off!" And symbolize various film classics. Other topics are the history of allotment gardens, seas of flowers and the design of graves in world religions.

mascot

Mascot "Birk"

In a competition organized by the Norderstedt Regional Horticultural Show in 2011, three characters were chosen as mascots : "Birk", "Lilly" and "Fleur". They represent elves and each represent one of the three parks. The winning ideas and drawings were submitted by three schoolgirls and a family of three.

financing

Investments of EUR 12.5 million and event costs of EUR 8 million over a period of five budget years were planned. In contrast, the planners expected that each visitor to the garden show would spend an average of around € 30 in Norderstedt. A support association for the State Horticultural Show was founded in 2011 .

Blockages

During the renovation, a large part of the city park was closed to users from October 26, 2009. The affected parts of the park were fenced in and monitored. Up until September 2010, guided tours of the site were offered on the first Friday of each month.

criticism

The site has been criticized for the fact that it is an existing park that is largely under nature protection and therefore cannot be changed in terms of landscape planning. In 2004, the inclusion of the Glasmoor , which is separated by Schleswig-Holstein-Strasse east of the Harksheider Stadtpark in Hamburg's urban area, was also planned for the garden show. The Norderstedter NABU turned against these locations and demanded that the moor, heather and birch forests be kept in their original state. GALiN advocated a central location in the Garstedt district .

The level of investment and event costs in the absence of financial support from the state were also criticized. Doubts were expressed about the economic viability of the garden show for the city, as well as about the promotion of tourism for Norderstedt, as provided for in the state government's tender for garden shows.

In 2004, the event was announced by the supporters for the years 2007 or 2008, which was criticized as too tight a time frame for sufficient information and participation of the citizens. In addition, in 2004 the horticultural show criticized the lack of plans for sustainable development in the city.

The construction of the large natural pool met with ecological criticism. A wide beach was built with a shallow water zone suitable for small children, for which the smaller, north of the two pebble lakes was partially filled in and the dam between the lakes was torn down. According to NABU, an important amphibian body of water was destroyed by the filling in of the small lake and an important settlement and hunting area for bats was destroyed by the removal of the dam . By May 2009, the city council had refrained from this plan and instead preferred a smaller pool with a narrower beach and the preservation of the small lake. After a change in the majority structure in the city council as a result of converting a parliamentary group, however, the construction of a large lido became possible.

Cultural center "Kulturwerk am See"

At the same time as the garden show was being set up, the industrial ruins of the former pot mine were gutted and converted into an art and cultural center, the “ Kulturwerk am See ” , on behalf of the city of Norderstedt . This is to be opened in the spring of 2012 as a new cultural event center in Norderstedt . During the garden show, the future foyer of the “Kulturwerk am See” served as the main entrance to the garden show grounds; the halls housed the twelve flower shows (“flower games”).

Reuse

After the end of the state horticultural show in Norderstedt, the area was redesigned to become the Norderstedt city park. The park area was retained, as was the lido. Furthermore, a water ski facility was built on the lake . The Norderstedt high ropes course has also been located in the city park since 2016.

The former sand-lime brick factory, used as a “flower factory” for the flower shows, is available for events as a “Kulturwerk am See” cultural center. For events u. a. the Waldbühne can also be used.
