Hans-Joachim Grote (born April 30, 1955 in Paderborn ) is a German politician ( CDU ). From 1998 to 2017 he was Mayor or Lord Mayor of Norderstedt and from June 28, 2017 to April 28, 2020 Minister of the Interior, Rural Areas and Integration of the State of Schleswig-Holstein ( Günther cabinet ).

Life

Hans-Joachim Grote put 1975 on Reismann Gymnasium Paderborn his Abitur from. Thereafter, until 1978, he trained for the higher non-technical service in the city administration of Paderborn and studied at the University of Applied Sciences for Public Administration in North Rhine-Westphalia in Soest with a degree in administration .

Grote has been a member of the CDU since 1976.

From 1978 to 1995 he worked in Paderborn as a department head and office manager in the upper and higher administrative service, as well as managing director in various municipal companies in the city. So he was u. a. Managing Director of the State Garden Show 1994 in Paderborn and Head of the Office for Public Relations and City Marketing.

In October 1995, Grote moved to Norderstedt in Schleswig-Holstein, where he was elected mayor in December 1998, as building department and first city councilor . After being re-elected in 2004, he was appointed Lord Mayor in 2005 with Norderstedt's new status as a city belonging to a large district . Grote belonged to numerous municipal umbrella organizations and supervisory bodies of municipal companies. After the state elections in Schleswig-Holstein in 2017 , he was appointed Minister of the Interior, Rural Areas and Integration in the CDU-led cabinet Günther on June 28, 2017 . This also ended his term of office as Lord Mayor of Norderstedt.

Grote was chairman of the conference of building ministers in 2018 and 2019 and chairman of the conference of interior ministers , the permanent conference of interior ministers and senators of the federal states, in 2019 . From February 5, 2020 to March 5, 2020, he temporarily held the chairmanship of the conference of interior ministers, as the presiding federal state, the Free State of Thuringia , did not have an interior minister at that time (see government crisis in Thuringia 2020 ) .

On April 28, 2020, Grote resigned with immediate effect in order to avert possible political damage, according to his own statements. The reason for this is the correspondence between him and a journalist that had been forwarded to the Prime Minister in the course of a public prosecutor's investigation against an officer of the state police.

Hans-Joachim Grote is married and has two children.
