The SG Wattenscheid 09 (officially: Sportgemeinschaft 09 Wattenscheid) is a football club from the Bochum district of Wattenscheid . The association was founded in 1909 and has around 1000 members. The club colors are black and white. The club's venue is the Lohrheidestadion . The men's team had to be officially closed on October 23, 2019.

The first soccer team played in the fourth-class Regionalliga West since its promotion in 2013 . Between 1990 and 1994 the Wattenscheider team belonged to the Bundesliga , and they played in the second division for 20 years .

From 1973 to 2010 the club also had a women's football department. The women's team played in the Bundesliga for two years before the division joined local rivals VfL Bochum .

From the foundation to the Second World War (1909 to 1945)

As early as 1907 there were two clubs in Wattenscheid with the name Ballspielverein, which merged a year later. On August 9, 1909, the Ballspiel-Verein 1909 Wattenscheid was founded, which merged with TV 1901 Wattenscheid on August 3, 1919 to form TuBV Wattenscheid 01 . The club was popularly nicknamed "Boobs and Bulls". On December 1, 1923, the clubs separated again in the form of a clean divorce . In terms of sport, the club mostly shuttled between the second and third highest league and was in the shadow of local rivals SV Höntrop in terms of sport .

On March 14, 1934, under pressure from the National Socialists, BV Wattenscheid 09 merged with SG 1930 Wattenscheid to form SG Wattenscheid 09/30 . The merger partner was the company sports club of the Zeche Centrum-Morgensonne . Just one year later, he was promoted to the second-class district class. The desired promotion to the first class Gauliga Westfalen was initially missed several times. In 1939 the team failed after an 8-0 defeat in a direct duel against Preußen Münster , four years later SpVgg Erkenschwick had the lead. Post-war period (1945 to 1969)

Immediately after the end of the war, SG 09/30 Wattenscheid became today's SG Wattenscheid 09. Together with the other Gauligists from 1939 to 1944, the club was included in the Landesliga Westfalen , from which the Wattenscheid had to be relegated and were promptly passed into the third division. In 1948 he was promoted again to the now second-class national league. A year later the club was included in the newly created 2nd Division West . In the 1952/53 season, the 09ers caused a sensation in the West German Cup . In the second round a 1-0 win over the upper division FC Schalke 04 succeeded , in the third round, Prussia Münster , another first division team was defeated. The end came in the quarterfinals against VfB Bottrop .

1954 were the Wattenscheider shortly before the promotion to the Oberliga West. On the last day of the match they met Westfalia Herne as third in the table , who was one point ahead of a promotion spot. In front of 18,000 spectators, the Herner won 2-1 and rose. In the following years the team fell back into mediocrity, in 1958 they had to accept relegation to the Association League Westphalia . At the same time, the businessman Klaus Steilmann from Neustrelitz founded a clothing company in Wattenscheid. Steilmann came to the club through his colleague Arkadius Peter; he became involved as a sponsor and later also as chairman. After third places in 1960 and 1961, the 09ers slipped into the table cellar and fought against relegation.

In 1965, the Wattenscheider were actually the third from last; however, they stayed in the league due to a chain of fortunate events. Initially, FC Schalke 04 remained in the Bundesliga due to the withdrawal of Hertha BSC's license. As a result, the STV Horst-Emscher did not have to relegate from the Regionalliga West. When VfL Bochum was promoted to the regional league by tossing a coin against SpVgg Erkenschwick, Wattenscheid was guaranteed to stay in the association league. Before that, the SG won a playoff against SpVg Beckum 1-0.

A year later, the club left its previous venue, Stadion Beckmannshof, and moved to the Lohrheidestadion. This move was not without problems, as the previous user Sportfreunde Rot-Weiß Leithe was not very happy about the new subtenant. In terms of sport, the 09ers made it into the top group of the association league. In 1969 the Wattenscheider team around goal scorer Gerd Haselhoff became champions of their season and prevailed in the subsequent round of promotion to the regional league. However, the final of the Westphalia Championship against DJK Gütersloh was lost 3-1.

Path to the Bundesliga (1969 to 1990)

With Wattenscheid's promotion to the regional league, a spirit of optimism set in in the club's environment. Mayor Erwin Topp took over the chairmanship and patron Klaus Steilmann aspired to the Bundesliga. First of all, the 09ers reached midfield. In 1972 Karl-Heinz Feldkamp took over the team and led the Wattenscheider team to the top group of the Regionalliga West. The highlight of the 1972/73 season was a 4-1 win over Borussia Dortmund . The kicker certified the Wattenscheidern “football of the most modern form”.

A year later , the 09ers secured the championship with 102 goals and moved into the promotion round to the Bundesliga. The team started with wins at Eintracht Braunschweig and 1. FC Saarbrücken and a draw against Wacker 04 Berlin . In the end they were third with 8: 8 points behind promoted Braunschweig and 1. FC Nürnberg . At the same time, the 09ers caused a sensation in the DFB Cup when they first prevailed against Bundesliga clubs Schalke 04 and Hertha BSC and only lost 1-0 to Hamburger SV in extra time in the quarter-finals .

In 1974 the 2nd Bundesliga started playing and the Wattenscheider team went into the 1974/75 season as a top favorite after signing the Argentinian national player Carlos Babington . Nevertheless, the team did not get beyond average. In 1977 she had to tremble for a long time about staying in the league. After a fifth place in the 1979/80 season , the 09er had to fear for relegation a year later as tenth again. Since Eintracht Braunschweig finally prevailed against Kickers Offenbach in the relegation games to the Bundesliga , the Wattenscheider qualified for the now single-track 2nd Bundesliga.

There the team was actually relegated as fourth from last in the 1981/82 season, but remained in the second division, as TSV 1860 Munich was punished with a license withdrawal. At the same time Wattenscheid B-Jugend won the German championship with a 3-1 final victory over Eintracht Frankfurt . The first team had to tremble for a long time to stay in the league in 1983 and 1984 before they could establish themselves in the middle of the table in the mid-1980s.

In the 1987/88 season , the Wattenscheider played for the first time for promotion. With a 1-1 draw at 1. FC Saarbrücken they missed the relegation due to the worse goal difference compared to SV Darmstadt 98 . A year later, Hans Bongartz took over the Wattenscheider as a coach and led them straight away to the runner-up and promotion to the Bundesliga. Bundesliga and last professional years (1990 to 1999)

Wattenscheid's promotion to the Bundesliga not only made the competition happy. The manager of FC Bayern Munich , Uli Hoeneß , described it as "the worst that could happen to the Bundesliga". As fourth in the 1999/2000 regional league season, the 09ers qualified for the now two-track Regionalliga Nord. There the team reached fourth place in 2002 and 2003. When several top performers such as the future Turkish national players Halil and Hamit Altıntop left the club, relegation from the regional league followed in 2004 after a 0-1 defeat at Preußen Münster on the last match day. As a champion of the Oberliga Westfalen, he was promoted again in 2005.

A turbulent time began for the Wattenscheider family. The renewed relegation from the regional league in 2006 was followed by relegation from the Oberliga Westfalen a year later due to the worse goal difference compared to the second team of Rot Weiss Ahlen . The club's economic situation was so problematic in summer 2007 that bankruptcy threatened. However, this was averted in July 2007 by the board members Rüdiger Knaup, Stefan Beermann and Peter Oelmann with the great support of the chairman of the supervisory board Wilhelm Beermann . In 2008 the team became champions of the Association League Westphalia 2 and qualified for the newly introduced NRW League .

The 09s got down from this two years later and were left without a team. Establishment in the Regionalliga West and insolvency (2013-2019)

At the end of February 2014 there were reports in the Turkish press about the entry of the first division club Galatasaray Istanbul for the purpose of recruiting players. Finally, a cooperation limited to five years was agreed between the clubs. By then, Wattenscheid should be promoted to the 3rd division . In terms of sport, the Wattenscheider managed to stay in the league despite some turbulence in the area. The players complained in an open letter about unpaid salaries and non-compliance with agreements on the part of the board. On May 8, 2015, the West German Football and Athletics Association (WFVL) announced that SG Wattenscheid would not receive approval for the regional league for the 2015/16 season. On May 13, 2015, this decision was revised by the WFVL so that the club could compete in the regional league in the 2015/16 season.

At the end of the 2015/16 season, the Wattenscheider team won the Westphalia Cup for the first time in the club's history with a 3-0 final win over Rot Weiss Ahlen . In the first main round of the DFB-Pokal 2016/17 they met the second division club 1. FC Heidenheim . Despite a good performance, the SGW retired with a 1: 2 defeat. In July 2018, the Hamburg start-up company Haalo Technology got on board as an investor and set the goal of making Wattenscheid the “most digitized ” club in Europe and bringing the club back into professional football. The investor wanted to provide the association with five million euros over a period of three years. The investor ended the collaboration at the end of September. The reason for this was, among other things, the no longer existing foundations for cooperation after internal power struggles at the board level of the association. The supervisory board members Bennemann and Wieschemann resigned after a dispute with the supervisory board chairman and main financier Oğuzhan Can. After it became known in mid-November 2018 that the club had liabilities of almost 200,000 euros and that some salary payments had not been made, it started a crowdfunding campaign because the liabilities had risen to 350,000 euros for a short time and another match would have been suspended without any other help have to. The neighbor FC Schalke 04 therefore competed in a rescue game in the Lohrheidestadion on July 14, 2019.

The second team of the club still reached the third-class Association League Westphalia under the name SG Wattenscheid 09 Amateure after two ascents in a row in 1970 . After finishing fourth in the 1971/72 season, the Wattenscheider team came third five years later. The team just barely missed the opportunity to qualify for the German amateur championship. In the following season she missed the qualification for the newly created Oberliga Westfalen .

The SG 09 Wattenscheid was the only amateur club in Germany, whose A-, B- and C-Juniors and B-Juniors played in the highest German junior class. The women's football department was founded in 1973. The first major success was the championship in the Regionalliga West in 1994. In the subsequent promotion round, the team made the leap into the Bundesliga . However, the immediate relegation followed. The direct re- promotion was only missed because of the two goals worse goal difference compared to Schmalfelder SV . A year later, the team missed promotion to the single-track Bundesliga. Several years followed in the top group of the regional league, but without being able to play seriously for the championship. Lohrheidestadion

The SG Wattenscheid 09 has played its home games in the Wattenscheid Lohrheidestadion since 1965. The stadium, with a capacity of 16,233 seats, of which 5,033 is covered, was opened in 1954 and renovated in 1992 and 2002.

The first sporting home was the sports field at the Zeche Holland , before the club used the sports field Südstraße from 1919 .
