Career as a player

societies

Emerging from the youth of SpVgg Nahbollenbach , Schupp moved to 1. FC Kaiserslautern in 1981 . In 1984 he received a licensed player contract with the Bundesliga club . In the first professional season he was used eight times and made his debut on February 2, 1985 (18th matchday) in the 5-0 away defeat against VfB Stuttgart , when he came on for Werner Melzer in the 80th minute . On May 21, 1985 (25th matchday) he scored in a 5-2 home win over VfL Bochum in the 68th minute to make it 4-0, just one minute after coach Manfred Krafft had substituted him for Bruno Huebner .

In 1991 he gave a year-long guest appearance at SG Wattenscheid 09 before moving to FC Bayern Munich in 1992 . There he also came to eleven international assignments.

In 1995 and 1996 he played one season each for Eintracht Frankfurt and Hamburger SV , for which he also scored two goals in four international appearances.

After a three-month engagement at FC Basel , he moved to the Austrian Bundesliga club SK Sturm Graz , for whom he was active and successful from 1997 to 2001 .

He was also able to qualify with SK Sturm Graz three times in a row ( 1998/99 , 1999/2000 and 2000/01 ) for the Champions League , in which he also scored a goal in 20 games. The last time he took part, he and his club made a mark when they were ranked among the 16 best teams after the group stage ahead of Galatasaray Istanbul , Glasgow Rangers and AS Monaco .

National team

Schupp played twice for the U-18 national team: on April 12, 1983 he was part of the selection that won against China 4-1 in Brand and on May 4th 1983 the selection that won Switzerland 5-2 in Schaffhausen defeated. On November 16, 1985, the U-21 national team defeated Czechoslovakia 3-1; with the substitution in the 75th minute for Manfred Schwabl , Schupp made his debut for the U-21s. He played his last game for this selection on March 24, 1987 in a 4-1 home win over Luxembourg.

In June 1987 Schupp took part in the military world championship in Italy with the Bundeswehr national team and took second place.

Success as a player

Career as a coach

From 2001 to 2003 Markus Schupp trained the SK Sturm Graz U-19 team. From July 2004 to the end of 2006 he coached the second division club SV Wacker Burghausen . He led this in 2004/05 to 9th and 2005/06 to 8th place in the table. Due to the poor performance in the first half of the 2006/07 season , Schupp was released early in December 2006; Fred Arbinger was his successor .

After the dismissal of the coaching staff at Hamburger SV in February 2007, Schupp took up the position of coaching assistant under Huub Stevens and stayed there until June 2008. After returning to Austria in July 2009, he was now at FC Red Bull Salzburg . This engagement was short-lived, however, as Schupp became head coach of the second division team at the Karlsruhe SC in early September 2009 after Edmund Becker was dismissed . On October 31, 2010 the KSC parted amicably from Markus Schupp after a series of five defeats from six games.

In November 2008, a commitment by the "ideal candidate" Schupp as a coach at third division club VfR Aalen failed because of the period he was asked to consider. In mid-December 2010 he was also in negotiations with the club about becoming a coach.

Career as a functionary

On August 11, 2011, VfR Aalen finally announced the engagement of Markus Schupp as sports director . In this role he was also responsible for the development or the continuation and implementation of a sustainable youth concept and the improvement of the youth departments. In its first season with the third division team, the professional team under head coach Ralph Hasenhüttl was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga and was able to keep the class there the following year. After Hasenhüttl's departure in June 2013, Schupp promoted Stefan Ruthenbeck , whom he had brought to the club a year earlier as head of the youth performance center, to the new head coach. The club got into financial difficulties at the end of the 2012/13 season due to the departure of the main sponsor and had imposed an austerity course for the new season, so that VfR Markus Schupp, whose contract ran until the end of the season, at the beginning of the winter break on 23. December 2013 relieved of his duties due to "different views in the strategic direction of the association".

From May 23, 2014 to November 2015, Schupp was sports director at 1. FC Kaiserslautern. From May 30, 2017 to February 16, 2018 he was the sports director of the Austrian Bundesliga club SKN St. Pölten .

Since 2018, Schupp has been working as a guest manager at every home game of FC Bayern Munich in the Allianz Arena in the VIP area.
