DFB Cup 1989/90
DFB Cup winner in 1990 was the first FC Kaiserslautern .
That season, the round of 16 took place on November 9, 1989. Later that evening, the Berlin Wall was opened in Berlin . Due to the live broadcast of the Stuttgart-Bayern game and the subsequent summary of the Kaiserslautern-Cologne game, the topics of the day were delayed , which is why Hanns-Joachim Friedrichs was the first news anchor to convey the assessment that there was complete freedom of travel: “The gates of the wall are wide open . “Only after these words did the storming of the Berlin Wall begin on a large scale.
The cup final in the Olympiastadion Berlin was combined with a celebration for the reunification on October 3, 1990. Kaiserslautern scored three goals in the first half hour of the final against Bremen. In the second half, Werder Bremen pushed for an improvement in the result, but after two goals they could not equalize. After losing four cup finals (1961, 1972, 1976 and 1981), Kaiserslautern was able to win the title for the first time. For Werder it was the second consecutive defeat in the final.
Defending champion Borussia Dortmund had already failed in the second round against second division club Eintracht Braunschweig .
In the European Cup Winners' Cup , Kaiserslautern was eliminated in the first round against defending champion Sampdoria Genoa when he first played , but was able to win the championship in the Bundesliga .
