The SC Geislingen is a sports club from the Swabian Geislingen an der Steige . The best-known and most successful division of the club, which has sixteen divisions, are the footballers, who now only play in the lower amateur range, and who have been involved in the highest German amateur leagues for decades. The footballers of SC Geislingen attracted nationwide attention in 1984 when Hamburger SV - the winner of the 1983 European Cup - was thrown out of the competition in the first round of the DFB Cup.

history

The Geislingen sports club was founded on June 1, 1900 and was called the Geislingen Football Club between 1920 and the re-establishment of the club after the Second World War . In 1937, the club missed the leap into what was then the first-class Gauliga Württemberg as fifth in the promotion round . In 1952, the sports club rose to the highest German amateur class, the 1st Amateur League Württemberg . This division belonged to the club until relegation in 1974. During this time, the Geislingen footballers were able to qualify as champions and runners-up in the 1st amateur league in 1959 and 1960 for the promotion games to the 2nd Oberliga Süd, in which, however, they failed both times.

After the club, which had meanwhile slipped into the state league, rose again to the Württemberg Association League in 1983, it qualified for the Baden-Württemberg Oberliga as early as 1984 . In addition to being promoted to the league, the team also won the WFV Cup in 1984 by beating TSV Ofterdingen 2-1 in the final, which qualified them for the DFB Cup . Here SC Geislingen achieved one of the biggest cup sensations in German football, when in the first main round on September 1, 1984, the then runner-up Hamburger SV , who had Uli Stein , Felix Magath , Thomas von Heesen and Manfred Kaltz in their ranks, defeated with 2-0 through the goals of Wolfgang Haug and Klaus Perfetto . In round two, the Geislinger footballers also retained the upper hand with a 4-2 win against Offenbacher Kickers , before losing 2-0 in the round of 16 against the Bundesliga club Bayer Uerdingen with two goals shortly before the end. The coach of the surprise team at that time was Jakob Baumann, who did not have a coaching license at the time, was a master painter and exercised the coaching function in his spare time.

After the sports club was relegated twice from the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg in 1986 and 1991, but both times celebrated a direct rise, it slipped after its third relegation in 1996 via the Association and State League to the district league. From the latter one rose again in 2011 to the state league, 2017 again from. In the 2017/18 season she was immediately promoted again. More years followed in the Landesliga Württemberg, where the club still plays today.
