Rüdiger Kauf (born March 1, 1975 in Esslingen am Neckar ), nicknamed "Rübe", is a former German football player in the defensive midfield.

Life

After training as an industrial mechanic at Daimler-Benz, Kauf did his community service in a hospital in Kirchheim unter Teck .

Career

Kauf began his football career in 1982 at TV Hochdorf, played from 1994 to 1996 at SC Geislingen and from 1996 to 1998 at VfL Kirchheim / Teck , with whom he rose in 1997 as champion of the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg in the then third-class Regionalliga Süd and that - ultimately lost against SSV Ulm 1846 trained by Ralf Rangnick - reached the final of the WFV Cup . While the club was directly relegated back to the league, Kauf joined the first division club VfB Stuttgart in the summer of 1998 , where he was initially used primarily in the reserve team that had been promoted to the regional league. In the 1999/2000 season he came under Rangnick for the first time in the Bundesliga when he came on in the 2-0 away win on November 26, 1999 at SC Freiburg shortly before the end of the game for Sean Dundee . But after he could not fight for a regular place in the third year in Stuttgart and had only played in the second team for half of the season, he moved to Arminia Bielefeld in the 2nd Bundesliga. With Bielefeld, Kauf made promotion to the Bundesliga for the 2002/03 season, but was relegated again the following year. In 2004, however, he succeeded in rising again immediately with Bielefeld. Kauf's greatest success in 2000 was 8th place in the Bundesliga with VfB Stuttgart. The Swabian, called "turnip" by fans, was an undisputed regular player at Bielefeld and, thanks to his tireless running effort and his duel strength, was considered Bielefeld's "midfield engine". He played centrally defensively there. With the exception of the 2005/06 season , where he was unable to complete the first half of the season due to a torn cruciate ligament that he suffered in a friendly against SC Wiedenbrück, he played over 30 of the 34 league games at Arminia Bielefeld in each season.

On October 21, 2006 in the home game against 1. FSV Mainz 05 , "Rübe" played his 100th Bundesliga game. Since the 2008/09 season, Kauf was the captain of the Arminia. He thus became the successor to Mathias Hain , whose contract had not been extended. This season, on May 13, 2009 in the home game against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim , Kauf also became the record Bundesliga player for Arminia with his 168 Bundesliga games.

Above all, Kauf was characterized by his willingness to work and his willingness to run, of which his former teammate Mathias Hain once said: “You have to shoot it, otherwise it will never stop!”. The fans of Arminia honored this commitment by choosing him twice in a row (2003 and 2004) as the Arminen of the season . After the 2010/11 season, in which he was injured only to a few missions and the East Westphalia relegated to the 3rd division , Kauf announced the end of his career.
