Gerry Ehrmann (2011)

Gerald "Gerry" Ehrmann (born February 18, 1959 in Tauberbischofsheim ) is a former German football player in the position of goalkeeper and today's goalkeeper coach . Most recently he was employed by 1. FC Kaiserslautern .

career

Ehrmann began playing football at TSV Tauberbischofsheim , where he was active for a total of thirteen years from 1965 to 1977. In 1977 the young, talented goalkeeper moved to 1. FC Köln and signed his first professional contract there. In his first season 1977/78 he was a substitute goalkeeper with 1. FC Köln 1978 German champion . Until 1984 he was a substitute goalkeeper behind the then goalkeeper of the German national team Toni Schumacher . Although he could not prevail against Schumacher, who was overpowering at the time, he developed into a first-class goalkeeper in daily training. During the seven years at 1. FC Köln Ehrmann only made two Bundesliga appearances.

It was only when he moved to 1. FC Kaiserslautern in 1984 that he became a regular goalkeeper in the Bundesliga . The practicing bodybuilder (nickname: "Tarzan") achieved his greatest success in 1991 when he became German champion with 1. FC Kaiserslautern. He also won the DFB Cup with the Palatine in 1990 and 1996 . Although he was ousted as a regular goalkeeper several times during his career, he still remained a crowd favorite. In the following season 1994/95 he was replaced after injuries by the newly signed Andreas Reinke , who remained from then on as a regular goalkeeper.

By the end of his career in 1998, Ehrmann played a total of 294 times in the Bundesliga and nine times in the 2nd Bundesliga . Ehrmann's strengths were his reflexes and one-on-one situations with attackers approaching the goal. He showed weaknesses on flanks.

Ehrmann has been a goalkeeper coach at 1. FC Kaiserslautern since 1996 ( 1996/97 also as an active goalkeeper) , where he also runs a goalkeeping school. In 1997/98 he was on the bench again as a substitute goalkeeper because of Petr Kouba's failure , the last time on March 28, 1998 against Bayer 04 Leverkusen . The goalkeepers he trained Roman Weidenfeller , Tim Wiese , Florian Fromlowitz , Tobias Sippel , Luis Robles , Kevin Trapp , Marco Knaller , Marius Müller , Julian Pollersbeck , Jan-Ole Sievers and Lennart Grill all made the leap into the professional field. Ehrmann enjoyed enormous popularity among the supporters of 1. FC Kaiserslautern long after his time as an active player. He was greeted loudly from the west curve when the goalkeepers warmed up .

After 24 years in office and 36 years in the club, 1. FC Kaiserslautern presented him on February 23, 2020 after “a series of internal incidents” within the coaching staff under head coach Boris Schommers , “a targeted and team-oriented cooperation for the benefit of the club no longer possible ", free. According to the FCK , Ehrmann reportedly made “massive, substantial insults, refusal to work and threats to the coaching team”. About a month later Ehrmann stated that he wanted to file a lawsuit against his exemption.
