The TSV 1863 Tauberbischofsheim registered association ( TSV Tauberbischofsheim e.V. for short ) is an ideal association for the promotion of sport based in Tauberbischofsheim in the Main-Tauber district in Baden-Württemberg . It is one of the oldest sports clubs in North Baden with the largest number of members. Several German championships could be won in individual sports of the popular sports club and individual athletes took part in professional leagues or top competitive classes for several years (including senior ranking lists in fencing , judo - Bundesliga fighters and national karate squads).

history

Beginnings as a gymnastics club

On August 20, 1863 a gymnastics club was founded. Just one day after it was founded, several of the seven founding members decided to target young people and win them over to the association. The first gymnastics lesson was held on August 24th. On August 29, 1863, the club accepted the statutes of the Upper Rhine Gymnastics Federation with minor changes. From May 25th to 29th, 1865 Tauberbischofsheimer athletes took part in the German Gymnastics Festival in Paris and in 1881 the first gymnasium was opened. Before that, the athletes trained on a gymnasium and in the rooms of the former Franciscan monastery at Tauberbischofsheim . In 1865 the first flag of the gymnastics club was consecrated. This is exhibited today in the Tauberfränkisches Landschaftsmuseum in the Kurmainzisches Schloss Tauberbischofsheim . Since the 1880s there have been tendencies towards multi-discipline clubs with different sports (including athletics, cycling, soccer). A theater club was also mentioned in the 1870s. From 1905 there was a women's team in the gymnastics club and since 1912 German sports badges were awarded for the first time . In 1913 the 50th anniversary of the gymnastics club was celebrated. During the First World War , sports activities came to a complete standstill (the last entry was made in the log book on July 22, 1915; the next did not follow until February 5, 1919). After sports operations were resumed in 1919, a track and field team was founded in 1924. After the old flag was damaged, a new flag was consecrated on October 14, 1934. The 75th anniversary in 1938 was the last major sporting event of the gymnastics club before the club merged.

Foundation of a sports club

Football was played in Tauberbischofsheim even before the First World War. However, an independent sports club was only founded in February 1921. First the team played on a meadow in the Brehmbach valley . In 1922, the city finally built a new sports field on the site of today's Grünewald Hall. In 1923 the club joined the South German Football Association . In the 1930s, the Tauberbischofsheimer footballers played against well-known opponents: Among others against 1. FC Nürnberg (1933) and SpVgg Fürth (1934).

Foundation and development of the TSV

On April 1, 1939, the TV Tauberbischofsheim merged with the SV Tauberbischofsheim , a pure football club, in a joint general meeting in the "Gasthaus zum Schwanen". The TSV Tauberbischofsheim in its present form emerged from the two clubs . The merger to form the TSV was a logical consequence, as the TV and SV had already organized joint sports advertising days, which were reported in the local press. A tennis club founded in 1927 joined the TSV as a subdivision. As a result, a multi-discipline club developed increasingly. In the course of the Second World War , the sport came almost completely to a standstill, as almost all athletes had to go to the front.

New beginning after the war

On January 1, 1946, the American military government approved the resumption of sports. In the same year a chess department was founded, but from 1947 it became independent as the Tauberbischofsheim chess club. At the end of the 1940s a swimming department was established. In 1951, the Frankenbad, a public outdoor pool, was built in the city. On the occasion of the 1200th anniversary, a gymnasium and festival hall was built in 1955, so that the sporting conditions improved enormously in the 1950s. On October 12, 1954, on the initiative of Emil Beck, the founding meeting of a fencing department took place. In 1963 the 100th anniversary of the gymnastics and sports club was celebrated. After the fencing department had several successes at German championships and developed rapidly, the department resigned from TSV Tauberbischofsheim on June 30, 1967. On October 14th, the official founding meeting of the Tauberbischofsheim fencing club took place in the "Raststätte Block" . A tennis home and several new tennis courts were opened between 1970 and 1975, followed by a joint sports home for the football and handball departments in 1985. In 1992 the Tauber Stadium was extensively renovated. In addition to the existing departments (gymnastics since 1863, football since 1921, tennis since 1927), the following branches were formed by the turn of the millennium: handball (1957), basketball (1958), judo (1966), table tennis (1967), volleyball (1988) , Badminton (1988), rock and roll (1993) and karate (2001).

The TSV after the turn of the millennium

On December 4, 2004, the German national women's handball team played in front of a sold-out house against the selection from Slovenia at an international match in Tauberbischofsheim. In 2013 the 150th anniversary of the association was celebrated, including two public exhibitions. IOC President Thomas Bach and State Transport Minister Winfried Hermann were among the guests at another ceremony on the occasion of the 150th anniversary in the Tauberbischofsheimer Stadthalle .

In March 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany, the sports grounds had to be closed and all training operations suspended indefinitely. The game was also suspended by the Badischer Fußballverband.

Well-known tournaments

Three Kings Tournament

The handball department has been holding a "Three Kings Tournament" in the hall since 1975, which soon developed into a mass event with over 100 teams from home and abroad.
