The sports club Westfalia Rhynern e. V. is a sports club from the district of the same name in Hamm in Westphalia . The association has eight departments and around a thousand members. Westfalia Rhynern became known through its football department . The first men's team played in the fourth-class Regionalliga West in the 2017/18 season . The venue is the Viactiv-Arena in Papenloh .

history

The club was founded on April 2, 1935 as the Rhynern gymnastics and sports club . After the Second World War , the Rhynern gymnastics and sports club was dissolved. On June 26, 1946, today's sports club Westfalia Rhynern was founded as the successor club, since the TSV was considered a " Nazi club ". Since many of the founding members had already been active in the Rhynern gymnastics and sports club, 1935 became the year Westfalia was founded. In 2013 the club thought about a merger with Hammer SC 2008 , but this did not materialize.

The first soccer team initially only played at the district level for decades. 1982 was the first to rise to the district league, where the team was runner-up in 1986 and 1990 behind the Warendorfer SU and the second team of Hammer SpVg . In 1997, Westfalia was promoted to the then fifth-class Association League Westphalia . Two years later, the team narrowly missed promotion to the Oberliga Westfalen . Westfalia finished third, two points behind master SC Herford . In 2002 the team rose after a defeat in the playoff against Borussia Emsdetten in the Landesliga Westfalen . The game in Münster was lost on penalties .

After the immediate resurgence, the club established itself in the association league. In 2006 the team was runner-up behind Hammer SpVgg, before being promoted to the NRW League as champions in 2010 . After a year in the NRW League, Rhynern would have been relegated again, but benefited from the withdrawal of TSV Germania Windeck and thus remained in the NRW League in the 2011/12 season . After an eleventh place, the Westfalia qualified for the re-introduced Oberliga Westfalen. There she finished third in 2015 after the team had long played for promotion. However, the club was denied the license for the Regionalliga West . Two years later , coach Björn Mehnert's team came second behind TuS Erndtebrück . Lennard Kleine, who was the top scorer in the league with 21 goals, played a major role in the runner-up . The West German Football Association initially refused Westfalia the license again. The reason for this was the alternative venue Evora-Arena , which did not meet the minimum standards for risk games.

A few days later, the association received approval after the Westfalia and the city administration had submitted new documents. Holger Wortmann succeeded the trainer Mehnert who had migrated to SC Wiedenbrück . After Westfalia had not won the first ten games, the new coach resigned. Under interim coach Dustin Wurst, Westfalia lost 8-1 to SV Rödinghausen , before the club's first regional league victory with a 2-1 win over Bonner SC . Torsten Garbe then took over the coaching position, but could not prevent the relegation of Westfalia as the knocked-down bottom of the table.
