The SpVg Brakel (officially: Spielvereinigung 1920 Brakel eV ) is a football club from Brakel in the Höxter district . The first men's team plays in the seventh-class national league after being promoted in 2016 . Between 1992 and 1998 the Brakeler played in the Oberliga Westfalen .

history

Early years

The club was founded in 1920 as the Brakel game and sports club and took its current name nine years later. In 1949 the Brakelern succeeded in advancing to the district class. After a runner-up in 1952 behind TuRa Elsen , two years later he was promoted to the then third-class state league , which was then the highest amateur league in Westphalia. In the promotion season , the team caused a sensation with a 3-1 win over Arminia Bielefeld , but also suffered a 9-0 defeat at SV Brackwede .

In 1956 , the newly created association league was missed by lengths. Despite the last place in the table, the SpVg remained in the state division before the team had to relegate to the district class in the following season. In 1959, as runner-up behind SuS Lage, the rise was missed. In the following years the club slipped down to the county league. It was not until the 1980s that there was a sporting renaissance when the SpVg rose from the district to the association league between 1983 and 1986. The derbies against TuS Bad Driburg caused a stir, especially during the times of the regional league . The highlight was the 1985/86 season when both teams fought for promotion to the association league. When the two clubs met in Bad Driburg , SpVg won 3-2 in front of 3,500 spectators with two goals from Claus-Dieter Wollitz .

Association league and major league (1986 to 1998)

Also in the association league, the Brakeler quickly became the top team and reached fourth place in the table in the 1988/89 season. After the team was able to repeat fourth place in 1991, the SpVg became runner-up in the northern season one year later, behind the amateurs of FC Schalke 04 . A relegation round was planned with the vice-champion of the southern season, the amateurs of SG Wattenscheid 09 and the last league, Rot-Weiß Lüdenscheid . In the meantime, the upper division ASC Schöppingen had applied for integration into the district league, but was transferred to the district league A by the association .

The people of Schöppingen protested and were right. To prevent further protests, the association canceled the relegation round and declared Brakel and Wattenscheid to be promoted to the then third-class league. In the then highest German amateur league, the Brakeler faced renowned opponents such as Arminia Bielefeld, Preußen Münster or TuS Paderborn-Neuhaus . The SpVg was able to establish itself in terms of sport, but missed the re-established regional league in 1994 . The sporting highlight was the 1994/95 season when the Brakel team finished sixth.

Despite its success, the club suffered from low attendance numbers that rarely exceeded 500. In the later years it became more and more difficult for the club to keep up with the league and fought against relegation. The 1995-96 season brought a 6: 0 on the SV Rotthausen the biggest win of Brakeler league history, but also a 0: 8 defeat to Rot-Weiss Lüdenscheid. Two years later , the Brakelers were relegated from bottom of the league table and lost 8-0 to the amateurs of Schalke 04 during the season.

Present (since 1998)

Back in the association league, the SpVg was third from bottom and would have been passed through to the national league. Only after Prussia Lengerich was allowed to rise to the top league through a subsequent game rating alongside SC Herford , the Brakelers remained in the association league. In the following years, the team fought against relegation, which took place in 2002 as bottom of the table. A year later, the team was passed through to the district league. With a newly formed team, the SpVg under coach Jürgen Prüfer succeeded in direct recovery.

Under Prüfer's successor Werner Koch the march into the association league succeeded. With one point ahead of BV Bad Lippspringe , the Brakelers secured the championship in the national league season 5. With a young team with players from the region, the SpVg reached seventh place in the 2006/07 promotion season. Two years later, the relegation to the regional league followed with a small squad. After three years in the midfield of the regional league, the team had to relegate to the regional league in 2012, as the 13th place in the table was not enough to stay up due to a league reform.

Three years later, the Brakelers secured the runner-up behind BV Bad Lippspringe. In the subsequent relegation, the Brakeler initially defeated SV Brilon , but then failed at SC Münster 08 . Things went better in the following season 2015/16, in which the game association managed to win the championship and return to the national league five game days before the end of the season.
