As a 13-year-old, Günter moved into Dortmund's youth boarding school as the youngest player to date. The former offensive player was retrained to become a central defender and played games for the A-Juniors of BVB within a total of four seasons, including both seasons for the B-Juniors. In November 2011 he was voted Sportsman of the Year for the city of Höxter .

However, it was not used.

Günter moved to the traditional Turkish club Galatasaray Istanbul on January 30, 2014 for a transfer fee of 2.5 million euros .
