The Leibniz Gymnasium | Dortmund International School in Dortmund is a public high school with two main focuses:

  1. Mathematics , natural sciences and computer science
  2. the world languages ​​( English , Latin , French , Spanish and Chinese ).

The linguistic focus is particularly evident in the bilingual (bilingual) branch of the school, which offers German-English courses.

The Dortmund Leibniz-Gymnasium is one of only about 30 schools in Germany (only half of which are public schools, the other half are private schools ) that are certified as an International Baccalaureate World School.

Around 1000 students are currently being taught at the Leibniz Gymnasium.

History of the Leibniz Gymnasium

The forerunner of the Leibniz Gymnasium was the Dortmund high school . In 1952, the grammar school in its present form was founded in Dortmund's Kreuzviertel as a mathematical and scientific grammar school for boys. In the 1960s it was moved from the Kreuzviertel to Hörde and housed in what is now the Phoenix Gymnasium . In 1967, the now two-tier high school was relocated to the new building on Kreuzstrasse, in a hexagonal architecture that was innovative for the construction at the time. The title of the school newspaper "Hexagon Papers", which existed in the 1970s, referred to the shape of the building. In the same year, the previous two trains became a three-class school structure - the third branch was run as a modern-language grammar school. Girls were only admitted to the Leibniz Gymnasium in 1971. In 2006, a three-course school structure became a four-course school structure, two of the classes were bilingual (German-English) classes. Chinese and Spanish have been offered as subjects since 2008. All four trains have been bilingual since 2013.

Awards

In 1999 the school was awarded the title School Without Racism - School With Courage .

In 2009, the Leibniz Gymnasium was certified as a World School and, in addition to the German Abitur, can also award the International Baccalaureate - a globally recognized qualification that is monitored by the IBO based in Geneva . In addition to traditional school subjects, the International Baccalaureate curriculum also includes social engagement (CAS: Creativity-Action-Service) and philosophy of science (TOK: Theory of Knowledge).
