The Stadtgymnasium Dortmund was founded in 1543 as the Archigymnasium (Protestant school for scholars) in Dortmund , making it one of the oldest schools in Germany .

history

In contrast to the German high schools of old tradition, which mostly emerged from parish or monastery schools on the one hand or by princely grace on the other, the Dortmund high school was founded on February 22, 1543 as a hoge or grote school on the decision to build a "common school for the youth" Mayor, council and common citizens had caught. The founding rector was the humanist Johann Lambach , his successor was Friedrich Beurhaus . Both were followers of the philosopher Petrus Ramus .

During the time of National Socialism , the school was called Hitler-Gymnasium . The building at the intersection of Ostwall and Märkische Strasse was destroyed in the Second World War. As the first of the Dortmund schools, it was reopened after the war on May 13, 1946 in the rooms of the Brothers Hospital at the instigation of the headmaster Anton Pesch . The current building was built in 1959, 200 m from the previous school building, between Ostwall and Heiliger Weg. As a sign of the destruction during the war, the former headmaster Hermann Hoßfeld placed a memorial plaque at the main entrance of the school, which reads: “s C ho L a tre M on I ens I s be LL o DI r V ta e CI nere refe C ta ”(for example:“ Dortmund school destroyed in the war and resurrected from ashes ”). The Roman numerals contained therein add up to the year of construction of the new construction ( chronogram ).

The school building was renovated in 1990 and in some places in 2005/2006. This mainly includes the specialist wing, which was in danger of collapsing but was renovated as quickly as possible. In 2010, the city high school took advantage of the economic stimulus packages offered and received, among other things, new windows in all classrooms , expanded thermal insulation and a completely new facade , which helped the city high school to gain a new external image. In 2011/2012 some energy-saving measures and safety measures should be implemented, for example the construction of a new heating system and fire doors.

The city high school today

The city high school is located in the center of Dortmund between the Ostwall and the Holy Way. Together with the Käthe-Kollwitz-Gymnasium, the auditorium and the sports hall on Ostwall are available to him.

The variety of foreign languages offered is unique within the Dortmund school landscape: in addition to English, French and Italian, subjects such as Latin, ancient Greek and Hebrew can also be chosen. It is particularly worth mentioning that Latin can be chosen from the fifth grade in combination with additional lessons in English. But it is also possible to start with English as the first foreign language.

Other areas such as social and natural sciences also shape the comprehensive, general canon of subjects at the city high school. A variety of extra-curricular activities that promote personality should enrich the atmosphere, e.g. B. Working groups, school trips, theater, music and dance performances and a constantly growing school exchange with partner schools in other European countries.

In 2012, in an open letter to the press, students from the city high school criticized the situation at the school, which was burdened by unreasonable missed lessons due to a lack of teachers.

School newspaper

The Rostra is the student newspaper of the City Gymnasium Dortmund, which is published regularly almost since the new construction of the school. It is therefore one of the oldest school newspapers in Germany. It is run and distributed solely by students and - unlike many other school newspapers - is free of charge. The edition is around 1300 copies. The Rostra is currently being edited by 12 authors. The authors change from issue to issue.

The history of the Rostra

The Rostra was founded at Easter 1949. The newspaper, which was initially called Das Stadtgymnasium , was prophesied by the teachers only to have a short lifespan; Too much strength and patience seemed to be needed to carry out regular lessons in the makeshift school building, let alone set up a school newspaper. But the optimism of the then six-strong editorial team won; the press report of June 30, 1949, which announced the first appearance of this newspaper, was followed by a few others who, among other things, dealt with the successful participation in school newspaper competitions.

After some name changes, it was last renamed ROSTRA in the 1970s and has kept the name to this day. Rostra was the name of a lectern in ancient Rome to which no one was denied access.

Special awards

In 2006 Rostra was voted the best school newspaper in North Rhine-Westphalia by the Cultural Foundation of the Provincial Insurance. There were several hundred other school newspapers to choose from. The first prize was a check for 450 euros. In 2012 the Rostra received this award again.
