Holger Lyre

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Holger Lyre (* 1965 ) is a German philosopher and professor of theoretical philosophy at the Institute for Philosophy at the University of Magdeburg . He is also the founding chairman of the Society for the Philosophy of Science.

Life

After studying physics, philosophy and neuroinformatics in Marburg , Dortmund and Bochum with a degree in physics in 1993, he received his doctorate in philosophy from the University of Bochum in 1996. He was a visiting fellow at the Center for Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh in the academic year 1998/99 and completed his habilitation in 2003 at the University of Bonn. After substituting professorships at the Universities of Bielefeld and Augsburg, he accepted a professorship for Theoretical Philosophy / Philosophy of Mind at the Institute for Philosophy at the University of Magdeburg in the 2009 winter semester.

research

Lyre's research focuses on the theory of science , philosophy of science , ontology , cognitive philosophy and philosophy of mind . In the mid-1990s he began working on the conceptual relationships between quantum and information theory, which he carried out in part in close cooperation with Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker . Then he turned to basic questions of gauge theories (physical field theories with local symmetries). In this and a general ontological context, he represents the position of structural realism . In the course of the 2000s there was also an increased focus on cognitive philosophy and the philosophy of mind. Here Lyre emerged primarily through work on the topics of multiple feasibility , reductionism and especially extended mind (extended cognition).

Teaching

As part of his teaching activities at the University of Magdeburg, Lyre was primarily responsible for the consecutive course in Philosophy-Neuroscience-Cognition there.
