Friedrich Beurhaus
Friedrich Beurhaus (born November 10, 1536 in Immecke near Meinerzhagen , † August 6, 1609 in Dortmund ) was a German humanist and rector of the grammar schools in Unna and Dortmund. He was a follower of the philosopher Petrus Ramus and author of numerous philosophical writings.
Life
Friedrich Beurhaus came from a family that manufactured iron and steel goods. He was born on November 10, 1536 as the son of Tilemann Beurhaus and his wife Margaretha. He first attended the schools in Meinerzhagen and Altena . He then moved to the grammar school in Dortmund in 1551 . Thanks to the rector Johann Lambach, who founded the school in 1543, this was a center of supporters of Petrus Ramus in the German-speaking area. Apart from a short escape from the plague, Beurhaus stayed in Dortmund until 1557. He had already worked as a teacher "pedagogue" for children from noble houses since he was seventeen. Despite his Protestant origins, he brought up the children of Friedrich von Fürstenberg from 1555 , including the later Landdrosten Kaspar , the later Prince-Bishop Dietrich and the later Canons Friedrich von Fürstenberg. He also accompanied them to study at the University of Cologne . There he was a student of the philosopher and theologian Gerhard Mathisius.
In 1561 Beurhaus became a fourth grade lecturer at the Archigymnasium Soest . In 1563 he moved to Unna as rector. During his time, the school was expanded. After the plague in 1567 had led to a drastic drop in the number of pupils, he returned to the grammar school in Dortmund as prorector. In the following years he turned down the reputation of numerous other renowned schools. Instead, he helped make the Dortmund high school flourish. From around 1577 he was vice principal of the grammar school. After Lambach's death in 1582, Beurhaus became rector and held the office until his death.
He published numerous philosophical writings in the succession and in defense of Petrus Ramus.
Emperor Maximilian II awarded him the honorary title of Comes Palatii Caesarei .
He married Sophia Braß in 1561 and was the progenitor of numerous people who were important for Dortmund's local history. Among them was the local historian Johann Christoph Beurhaus, born in 1722.
