The Phoenix-Gymnasium is a grammar school in the Dortmund district of Hörde with around 1100 students. The complex, which consists of several buildings, was built in 1855. The school has existed under the name Phoenix-Gymnasium since 1967. The school is currently run by the director Annette Tillmanns.

History

The Phoenix is mentioned for the first time in 1583 as a convent school for young noble canonesses . The school was not mentioned again until 1853. The Arnsberg regional administration , which was also responsible for school administration at that time, ran it as a rectorate school that had existed for some time and recognized the school as a public school .

The school initially functioned as a girls' college until it became a community elementary school in 1911. From now on, both boys and girls could attend a three-level preschool . New construction began in 1911 and was completed in 1912. This building on the Emscher still exists. The renewal of the school had become necessary because 210 pupils were already attending the school, which later became the Phoenix High School. The number of pupils increased in the following years to up to 383 pupils.

In 1937 the rectorate school was renamed Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Schule , named after the German writer Ernst Moritz Arndt . Like many other Hörder buildings, the Phoenix-Gymnasium did not survive World War II unscathed. The school was hit by an aerial bomb in the summer of 1944 , as a result of which the auditorium burned out.

The Phoenix was reopened shortly after the end of the war in 1945/46, with the two schools Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Schule and Goethe-Oberschule being combined in the building Seekante 43. From now on the Phoenix was a pure high school . However, the conditions of the lessons were still poor due to the war damage . In winter there was no heating and no tight roof. From now on there were regular classes in this building.

In 1967 the school, now known as Humboldt Gymnasium II , became the Phoenix Gymnasium. The Phoenix-Gymnasium is an independent school .

School WiFi

From September 2012 to 2015 there was free WiFi for all teachers and students . This was set up by the Dortmund system house, but can now only be used by teachers (secured by a MAC address filter). A username and password are required to access this network.

New gym and school renovation

Like the Goethe-Gymnasium, this school received a new triple gym, which opened on June 24, 2014. This saves the students from taking the bus to the Helmut-Körnig-Halle for physical education lessons.

Since the summer vacation 2014 the Phoenix-Gymnasium has been rebuilt. a. also the school yard. The stairs to the street Seekante were demolished; In addition, a new bicycle parking facility and "garbage station" were built. The work was completed at the end of December / beginning of January 2015.
