Michael Henke (born April 27, 1957 in Büren ) is a former German soccer player and current coach . Henke became publicly known primarily through his function as Ottmar Hitzfeld's long-time coaching assistant at Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern Munich , for which Hitzfeld and Henke won numerous national and international titles.

Career as a player

Henke played as a footballer at SV 21 Büren (1964–1975), 1. FC Paderborn (1975–1978), Teutonia Lippstadt (1978–1980), SG Wattenscheid 09 (1980–1983) in the 2nd Bundesliga , the TuS Paderborn Neuhaus (1983–1986) and at the end of his career from 1986 to 1988 at FC Gütersloh , where he also worked as a coach for a year in 1988.

Parallel to his playing career, Henke was studying to be a teacher in the subjects of sport and geography at the Ruhr University in Bochum . After completing his studies, he completed a traineeship as a teacher , but then decided to pursue a career as a coach and assistant coach in professional football .

Career as a coach

Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich

From 1989 Henke worked at Borussia Dortmund as an assistant to Horst Köppel (1989–1991), Ottmar Hitzfeld (1991–1997) and Nevio Scala (1997–1998) and from 1998 to 2004 at FC Bayern Munich as assistant coach to Ottmar Hitzfeld.

1. FC Kaiserslautern and 1. FC Saarbrücken

On July 1, 2005, Henke took over responsibility for the first time at 1. FC Kaiserslautern as the head coach of a Bundesliga club . He was released on November 19, 2005 after a bad start to the season. The club was at this point with nine points from 13 games on the bottom of the table. His successor Wolfgang Wolf could no longer prevent the descent of the Palatinate . Henke made negative headlines in the second round match in the DFB Cup at FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt when he insulted the Erfurt players with the words "Scheiß Ossis " and "Ossipack". 1. FC Kaiserslautern fined him 10,000 euros for this, which he paid to the Erfurt youth department.

From June 2006, Henke was head coach at 1. FC Saarbrücken , but was released from his position as coach on October 30, 2006. He took over the post of sports director .

Bayern Munich and 1. FC Cologne

On January 31, 2007, 1. FC Saarbrücken terminated the contract at his request because, after Bayern Munich had signed Ottmar Hitzfeld as his successor for Felix Magath , he was again under his long-time boss as an assistant coach at Bayern Munich wanted to work. He returned to this position from February 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008. His head coach Hitzfeld became the coach of the Swiss national team on July 1, 2008 . After Hitzfeld originally wanted to involve Henke as assistant coach for the Swiss, Hitzfeld decided against him because he needed a French- speaking assistant.

Therefore, on July 1, 2008, Henke accepted the offer from FC Bayern Munich to work under the new coach Jürgen Klinsmann as chief analyst and head of match monitoring. For this activity he had a contract running until June 30, 2010.

On June 12, 2009 1. FC Köln signed Henke as assistant coach to Zvonimir Soldo . After a bad start to the season, he was on leave on October 24, 2010 together with Soldo.

Esteghlal Tehran

On July 16, 2011, Henke signed a contract as assistant coach with the Iranian record champions Esteghlal Tehran . According to the ISNA news agency , he also acted as a technical advisor to club president Ali Fattollahzadeh. On March 15, 2012, he won the Cup with Esteghlal . His contract ended at the end of June 2012.

FC Ingolstadt 04

On February 1, 2013, Henke became assistant coach at the German second division club FC Ingolstadt 04 under head coach Tomas Oral . He signed a contract that ran until the end of June 2014. After the leave of absence of Oral's successor Marco Kurz on September 30, 2013, Henke looked after the team as an interim coach and then worked as assistant to head coach Ralph Hasenhüttl , with whom he achieved promotion to the Bundesliga in 2015. When Hasenhüttl left Ingolstadt for Leipzig after the 2015/16 season , Henke gave up his position as assistant coach. However, he stayed with FC Ingolstadt as an employee to expand international relations . After Markus Kauczinski was released , Henke took over as interim coach from November 8, 2016, initially training the first team for a few days during the international break and then returned to the coaching team as Maik Walpurgis' assistant coach.

Shanghai Shenhua

After Henke left his position at FC Ingolstadt in October 2017, he announced on January 14, 2018 that he would be joining the Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua as an assistant coach .

FC Ingolstadt 04

After Jens Keller's dismissal , Tomas Oral became the new head coach of FC Ingolstadt 04 on April 2, 2019 . With him, Michael Henke returned to the club as an assistant coach.

After the Ingolstadt team was relegated to the third division , Henke left the coaching team and took over the post of sports director at the Schanzern.
