Niko Bungert (born October 24, 1986 in Bochum ) is a former German soccer player and today's coach .

Career as a player

Bungert began his career in 1990 at VfB Günnigfeld . From 1996 to 2004 he played for SG Wattenscheid 09 and was signed by FC Schalke 04 in 2004 . In 2005 he signed a professional contract there. For the 2006/07 season he was loaned to the second division Kickers Offenbach , for which he completed his first professional assignments. In the second half of the season he fought for a regular place and was firmly committed by Kickers Offenbach.

For the 2008/09 season he moved to 1. FSV Mainz 05 . In his first season he was promoted to the Bundesliga with Mainz 05 and reached the semi-finals of the DFB Cup 2008/09 . In the 2011/12 Europa League he failed with the team in qualification, but finally reached the group stage of the 2016/17 Europa League five years later . Here he scored the Mainz team's first goal in a group stage of the Europa League in the home game against AS Saint-Étienne (1: 1); the team retired as a third party.

Bungert was a leading player and has been team captain at Mainz 05 since 2016. He has completed a distance learning course in football management. His contract with Mainz 05 ran until June 30, 2019. He then ended his professional career and completed a trainee program at Mainz , where ideas for a possible future role for Bungert in the club are to be developed together.

National team

Bungert was used for various junior national teams of the DFB . With the U19 national team he took part in the U19 European Championship in 2005 and for the U21 national team he completed three international matches , but was not appointed to the squad for the U21 European Championship 2009 .

Career as a coach

On November 18, 2019, Bungert became co-trainer of the new head coach Achim Beierlorzer at 1. FSV Mainz 05 alongside Jan-Moritz Lichte and Michael Falkenmayer .
