Carlos Babington (born September 20, 1949 in Buenos Aires ) is a former Argentine football player and official.

career

Born the grandson of an English grandfather, Babington began his career in 1969 with CA Huracán and won the championship with the club in 1973 under coach César Luis Menotti . Shortly thereafter, he was supposed to move to Stoke City , but the change failed due to his grandfather's missing birth certificate. Even Inter Milan he wanted to commit, but were allowed at that time in Italy only foreigners with Italian ancestors play.

At the 1974 World Cup in Germany , he was discovered by Klaus Steilmann , patron of the then German second division club SG Wattenscheid 09 . So he moved to Wattenscheid and played 120 games in the 2nd Bundesliga North in four years , in which he scored 46 goals. In 1979 he returned to Atlético Huracán and scored a total of 126 goals as an attacking midfielder until 1982. He ended his active career in 1982 with the Tampa Bay Rowdies in Florida .

Babington was an Argentine international and scored two goals there. Among other things, he was part of the Argentine team at the 1974 World Cup . There he was voted the ninth best player. According to his own statements, a failed move to River Plate and the associated stay in Wattenscheid prevented participation in the 1978 World Cup .

From 1988 to 1991 Babington was the manager of Atlético Huracán and he has been the club's president since 2005.
