The Coppernicus-Gymnasium is a modern language and natural science high school in Norderstedt . Founded in 1963 as an offshoot of the Johannes Brahms School in Pinneberg, the Garstedt grammar school , as it was temporarily called, became independent two years later. The founding date is generally April 13, 1965, the day when the first headmaster Willi Rasche was inaugurated. The Coppernicus-Gymnasium has been a European school since 2004 .

Namesake

The school is named after the eminent astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus , in the spelling that was advocated by his biographer Leopold Prowe . The Coppernicus-Gymnasium has its own observatory and offers the students an astronomy working group. In 1979 the school received the portrait of the astronomer from Thorn from Federal Chancellor Helmut Schmidt .

history

On April 18, 1963, the Garstedt branch of the Johannes Brahms School Pinneberg was opened. The Garstedt community, which was still independent at the time, belonged to the Pinneberg district until the new city of Norderstedt was founded . The school was under the formal management of senior studies director Johannes Eggers, the then headmaster in the district town of Pinneberg . He was initially supported by Karl-Heinz Otzen and, from April 1964, by Willi Rasche in the coordination tasks and the establishment of the branch on the eastern edge of the district to provide schools in the up-and-coming community of Garstedt with a strong population increase. Lessons began with two sixths and one quinta in the rooms of the Garstedt secondary school ; The foundation stone for the new building was laid on October 28, 1964 on (then) Birkenweg in the Garstedter Feld district.

The celebrations for independence, which were announced retrospectively to February 1, 1965, took place on April 13, 1965 in the premises of the Garstedt secondary school, which was also newly built at the time, on Aurikelstieg. At the same time, the first headmaster, Willi Rasche, was officially introduced to his office. Exactly one year later, on April 13, 1966, the new school building was ready to move into. The official inauguration took place together with the awarding of the name Coppernicus-Gymnasium Garstedt on September 10, 1966.

The remaining construction phases were essentially completed by the early 1970s: east wing with six classrooms (1966), music hall (1968), west wing I with six classrooms (1968), two sports halls (winter 1969/1970), outdoor sports facilities (1970), extension west wing I by two additional classrooms (1971), west wing II (1971) and a noise protection wall between the two western extensions to Heroldstraße (today's Coppernicusstraße) (1971). On February 1, 1972, the observatory was put into operation and in 1997 the third sports hall. In June 2011 the southern extension was completed as an extension of the eastern extension with a cafeteria, a second music room as well as four class and group rooms and a learning workshop.

With the founding of the city of Norderstedt on January 1, 1970, the school administration was transferred to the city of Norderstedt, which now became part of the Segeberg district . As a result, the Coppernicus Gymnasium Garstedt became the Coppernicus Gymnasium Norderstedt .

On the evening of February 1, 1988, a fire broke out in the physics department in the main building of the school and destroyed both the physics room and the chemistry lecture hall. The art and work rooms below were significantly damaged. The fire caused total damage of around one million  DM .

In 2001 the school conference decided on a school program that had been worked out in previous years. For this purpose, the Coppernicus-Gymnasium was included in the pilot project of the Ministry of Education, School Quality in Diversity , in autumn 1998 .

During the project week 2000, a much-noticed school beautification campaign was carried out, in which the main responsibility lay in the hands of the parents. Schoolchildren, teachers, more than 70 parents and former pupils took part in the renovation of the school building and the preparation of the outdoor area for a week. Parents donated around DM 3,400 for this purpose, the city of Norderstedt took on the material costs of more than DM 7,500, and a private company provided the painting tools free of charge. Thanks to the initiative of the Coppernicus-Gymnasium, the school authority saved an estimated 40,000 DM.

On May 4, 2004, he was appointed the 25th European School in Schleswig-Holstein. The awarding of the title was celebrated with a big European festival together with the partner schools in Maromme and Tczew .

The Coppernicus-Gymnasium was certified as one of only eleven schools in Schleswig-Holstein on June 17, 2011 as a competence center for the promotion of the gifted at secondary level I and II .

Ski ride

A “trademark” of the Coppernicus-Gymnasium is the skiing that the ninth grades carry out. The idea came up in 1982 during the school's first project week, when 46 students and six sports teachers drove to Gerlos in Austria . Every year since 1983, a complete middle school year has traveled to the Alps (since 2001 to Mallnitz ) to learn to ski, initially in the tenth grade and from the mid-1990s on the ninth grade. In cooperation with the sports club 1. SC Norderstedt, an extensive "ski cellar" was created over the years, which provides ski equipment for all participating students on loan free of charge.

Business and business internship

A two-week business internship is planned for tenth grade students and a two-week business internship for eleventh grade students. Since the internships take place right before the autumn or Easter holidays, there is the option of voluntary extension into the holidays. The internship positions are to be chosen by the students themselves.

Project week

A project week has been held annually since 1982, and for several years right before the autumn break. Projects for the students are offered by teachers, parents as well as (high school) students. At the same time, the internships of grade 10 and z. Sometimes exchange trips take place (see above).

architectural art

Sculpture by Harald Duwe

In 1966, by a conference resolution, the teaching staff prevented a sculpture by a Pinneberg colleague from being erected in front of the new school building without prior notice. After the invitation to tender, a sculpture by Harald Duwe was placed in front of the main entrance and one by Walter Arno in the east school courtyard.

Duwe's sculpture, which is often interpreted as a representation of the Copernican view of the world , was the model for the school logo introduced in the 1990s in the sense of corporate identity .
