The Archeparchy Prešov ( Latin Archieparchia Presoviensis ) is a Greek Catholic Archeparchy on the territory of Slovakia, united with the Roman Catholic Church . The current Archbishop of the Prešov Archepark is the Jesuit Ján Babjak .

history

The present eparchy of Prešov was until September 22, 1818 part of the Ruthenian eparchy Mukacheve established on September 19, 1771 . Until January 18, 1996, the Prešov eparchy consisted of the Greek Catholic Christians in what is now the Czech Republic . These have been cared for pastorally since 1996 in the newly founded Apostolic Exarchate of the Czech Republic . On January 27, 1997, the newly founded Apostolic Exarchate Košice emerged from the Prešov eparchy.

On January 30, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI. with the Apostolic Constitution Spiritali emolumento the previous eparchy Prešov to the archeparch and subordinated to this the eparchies Bratislava and Košice as suffragan dioceses . Since then, the area of the Erzerparchie has been congruent with the political district of Prešovský kraj . As a result, the Metropolitan of Prešov, as arch exarch, also became first hierarch (chief of rank) of the Slovak Greek Catholic Church .
