Ján Babjak SJ (born October 28, 1953 in Hažín nad Cirochou , Czechoslovakia ) is Archbishop of the Prešov Archepark and Metropolitan of the Greek Catholic Church in Slovakia .

Life

Ján Babjak studied theology and philosophy at the seminary of St. Cyril and Method in Bratislava . In 1978 he was ordained a priest by Bishop Joachim Segedi and was active in the pastoral care of the Prešov eparchy. In 1987 he joined the religious order of the Society of Jesus . From 1991 to 1994 he studied spirituality at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome , where he received his doctorate . Then he was rector of the spiritual center "Michael Lacko" in Košice and taught at the University of Trnava .

In 2002 he was appointed Bishop of Prešov by Pope John Paul II . The episcopal ordination received his John Paul II himself. Co- consecrators were the Curia Bishop and later Cardinal Leonardo Sandri and Archbishop Antonio Maria Vegliò , Secretary of the Congregation for the Eastern Churches .

In 2008 the eparchy Prešov was founded by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed the seat of the Metropolitan and Ján Babjak appointed Archbishop-Metropolitan of the Prešov Archeparchy. In 2009 the Pope appointed him a member of the Congregation for the Eastern Churches.
