Sun of Jamaica is a song by the Goombay Dance Band that was released as a single in October 1979 and was also released on the album Zauber der Karibik in 1980 . It was the Goombay Dance Band's only number one hit in Germany and one of two in Austria . It was also the best-selling single of 1980 in Germany .

Origin and content

The song was written by Ekkehard Stein and Wolfgang Jass and produced by Ernest Clinton and Jochen Petersen . The pop song has elements of both disco music and hits . Some elements of Caribbean music are also woven in. In the stanzas presented as spoken passages, the narrator speaks of his wish to visit Jamaica , since he saw the film Mutiny on the Bounty as a young boy . This is the 1962 version of the film, as Marlon Brando is explicitly mentioned.

Publication and reception

The single was released on CBS in October 1979 . On the B-side is the title Island of Dreams , but Alice My Love on the British single from 1982 . Sun of Jamaica reached number one in the German single charts and was placed there for nine weeks with interruptions from January 21 to April 27, 1980, a total of 41 chart weeks in it. It also reached number one in Austria (28 chart weeks) and third place in Switzerland (17 chart weeks). In the Netherlands it came in first place (13 chart weeks), in Belgium ( Flanders ) as well (13 chart weeks) as in Spain (five weeks in first place). In Sweden the title came in fifth (eight weeks) and in New Zealand in 19th place. The song was also featured on numerous compilations . In 1982 the British single reached number 50 on the local charts and number 14 in Ireland . In Germany, the single received a platinum record for over 500,000 copies sold, and the single has sold over ten million copies worldwide.

On February 25, 1980, the Goombay Dance Band performed the song in disco on ZDF . On October 24, 1985, she was a guest at Melodien für Millions . Fire-breathing by Oliver Bendt and limbo dancing by the band members were part of the program for both appearances .

The song was re-released several times, about 1992, 1995 (Goombay Dance Band & Cool Summer Cuts) and 1999. Also in 2012 a German version of the Goombay Dance Band with the title Traum von Jamaica , under which Peter Alexander published his version in 1988, was released.

Cover versions

Numerous cover versions appeared. A German cover version from 1980 with the title Never Be Alone Again was written by Tony Holiday , who wrote the German text himself. This version, which was produced by Uve Schikora , reached number 15 in the German charts and was placed for 25 weeks. Tony Holiday first performed the song on April 21, 1980 as a new presentation in the ZDF hit parade . He was voted second and was therefore allowed to perform the title again in the following episode on May 19, 1980. In this he was voted number one, which gave him a third appearance on June 23, 1980.
